Woodside Report - great kiting winds in Eagle Ranch LZ all day for the new students and Ken (who mastered his reverse techniques).
It was definitely not student conditions at launch, as I had to fly first tandem with Bruce (Sasquatch Inn Manager) for his 50th birthday present today. Got off first try in a lull, watched Gary "dirt-surf" off launch and a few other interesting launches in the high winds! We were cloud surfing at 1100 meters, maintaining about 10 kms of forward speed on the Tucan so no problem soaring for an hour before he started shaking from cold, so we flew to Harvest soaring Cemetary Hill for a while with two planes landing and buzzing the private airstrip south of the hill. Bruce and Jim tandem climbing through 800 meters - photo by Ed Rilkoff Around 6:00 pm, I watched Rob S get off launch after a few attempts, and he climbed fast. But there was an un-named pilot flying a U-Turn glider on big-ears descending over launch? Why use ears when you need all the speed you can get today! Next thing you know, said pilot is getting blown back and gets rotored into the clearcut behind launch and is last seen with his wing folding up as he disappears!! Norm and Jack ran out to locate the pilot who was lying on his back in a pile of logging rubble, and was able to walk out. Unfortunately, someone called 911 and Search and Rescue, 2 cops and 2 ambulances showed up before anyone could get them word the pilot was okay. Tip of the Week: do not pull "big-ears" in high winds without an exit strategy. You will lose 4-5 kms of airspeed on most gliders even with some speed bar. Leave "big-ears" to cloud avoidance with lots of altitude, not down low or top-landing.

Grouse Report - a few pilots flew Grouse for the last time this season, extended sled rides into Cleveland Park.
| Woodside Report - Martin and Mia were observed soaring the clearcuts for a few hours on their PGs.

Woodside Report - another beautiful day in the Valley, a bit windy at times, but no fliers at Woodside.
Perhaps Grouse was the place to be as the last flights of the season are happening today and Friday. The LZ permit expires at the end of August and some pilots chose to fly and land in the middle of a soccer game last week prompting the District of North Vancouver to lodge a complaint against the GMFT.

Bridal Report - Your pireps have been looking empty so I guess we should 'fess up...Derek & I have flown the last 3 days at Bridal. Although we launched at different times every day (4:30, 5:45 and today around 4) it's definately fall and we never got much over half an hour. That being said it's a gorgeous time of year to fly Bridal - smooth ridge soaring close to the trees with their leaves glowing red amd yellow. Klaus & Monica joined us today, with Alan driving down despite him watching both Klaus & I stay over launch for a few passes!

Woodside Report - no pireps, but it looked good all day from Vancouver. Hope got windy around 3:00 pm, but Abbotsford was good all day so I suspect it was flyable all day at Woodside and Bridal.

Woodside Report - more stable than yesterday but still very crowded. | Ihor flew a 45 minute flight getting "back on the horse" and was cranking some good turns to stay aloft. Martin H bagged a few flights getting similar airtime. The "hangies" spent more time building their gliders than flying them due to the stable air. I launched the students 5 times, and had 3 tandems as well during the day ending at 6:00 pm for a change.

Woodside Report - despite stable forecasted conditions the masses descended on Woodside today.
Our first flight at 9:30 am was smooth and no one else at launch so I thought we had the site to ourselves,
but by noon there were forty (40) gliders around launch getting setup (both HG and PG). | It started getting soarble by noon and Martin H bagged over an hour before sinking into Riverside. Later many gliders were soaring in a gaggle over the big clearcut, including Colleen who "skyed everyone out" before heading out to guide students into Eagle Ranch. I had two tandems to do and it took awhile to get in line but the frst one went extremely well getting above launch for sometime before a smooth landing at the Ranch, the second tandem required a forward launch and lasted only 15 minutes but we got some thermalling in before having to land. The last flight had Vickie well above launch on her Fiesta (her fifth flight) before a perfect landing at the Ranch. Bev got back in the Saddle too, with a perfect launch and landing, welcome back. Woodside Report - pretty stable with pilots getting sled rides even later in the day, no reports from Alan as he went to a new Skagit Valley site to test it out.

Bridal Report - Alan logged 2+ hours in light lift, high clouds kept shading his thermals so he would get pretty low before climbing above launch. He overheard Alex R flying from the secret Miracle Valley site eventually landing at Deroche for a good 20 km+ flight.

Woodside Report - the webcam showed it was clear at Woodside most of the day, but it was windy flying over Harrison Lake at 2:20 pm judging from the whitecaps which were visible from 15,000 feet. Not too bumpy despite the towering CU everywhere in the Fraser Valley.

Woodside Report - Jack and I debated whether we would get more than one flight with the dodgy forecast,
but eventually the students got four flights and Colleen got back in the air for the first time in 2 months flying with a new SupAir airbag harness (instead of her comp harness). She ultimately flew three times helping get the new students into the LZ.
| Colleen just off Woodside launch - photo by Neil Barnett Norm and I flew down tandem for our best glide contest with Jack on his Addict and us on the Magnum. Jack launched first and we hopped of in light winds right after him. The Magnum is faster at trim speed than the Addict on 1/4 bar! but our best efforts at a best glide were only going to get us to Eric's farm at Mill Road so we bailed to the Ranch to do some wingovers and thread the goal-post trees on final. We quit flying at 4:00 pm cause we were too tired.

Woodside Report - you know it is going to be a good day when Martin H is at launch before noon (it paid off as he flew over 117 kms).
| Good development early and no wind on the ground until 11 am. We had 3 new students (Rob, Neil, Ken) and they kited hard on the training hill and were ready around 2:00 pm, but it was too strong for the newbies so only Wouter (1 hour) and Kelly flew (he also got about 40 minutes). Mia logged close to 2 hours on her Buzz and didn't get whacked too badly, before landing at Eagle Ranch. Wouter's view above Woodside launch on his 25th flight - photo by Wouter J. Colleen was out kiting with the new folks and she was ready to fly but opted for a massage from "That FlyBC Girl Julie" instead. Maybe tomorrow. After 7:00 pm, all the new students flew following Gretchen as she climbed to cloudbase in the glass-off with Stefan. Unfortunately, no one else got as high but they all flew their first solos in buoyant air. Blanchard Report - Crowded skies and great flights as a huge gaggle of pilots ascended at Blanchard today. It must be fall. Logging 35 minutes, I had one of the shorter flights for a paraglider. Others stayed in the air for over 2 hours - TJ

No pireps locally, but there were some sunny patches in the Valley.
| The Seattle Aero Battle is happening Sept. 16-17! If you have been in a contest before the entry fee is $300. If you haven't done competition, then the price is $350 and we will provide coaching. Single tows are $75. If you have done more than one maneuvers course, then you are invited. We will provide coaching for your runs. The contest will be judged by competitors. This is a really good time and we will have prizes for best costumes etc. The judging is all about showmanship. You could win by having a good costume, landing in the water and making everyone laugh... Let me know if you can make it. We will arrange airport pickup and help you to find lodging. Local pilots are pretty good about hosting folks.... My wife just bought a round trip ticket from Salt Lake to Seattle for $240. Most pilots agree that you learn more from an event like this than from an average maneuvers session. Please forward this note to your friends and your local news group. If your stunt is sketchy enough or your costume cool enough, you could get a free tow. Chris Santacroce Super Fly Inc. Advance, Gin Gliders and Nova Exclusive US Distributor

Black Mtn. Report - Finally something to talk about. Delvin, Murdoch and I had nice flights
at Black today. On my 11th flight back at it, I stayed up for an hour and
twenty minutes. I may be ready for the crowded skies of Woodside . . . Scary
landing zone in today's conditions! TJ

Woodside Gloat Report - great student day after yesterday's wind and rain (but Saturday was a great ground handling day, cause all the newbies flew solo on Sunday).
| Around noon, Colleen suggested it was too strong in the Eagle Ranch LZ for new folks so I got to fly solo for a change. Norm and I made a plan to fly to Harrison for lunch, and we were soon climbing through the gaggle (including Wouter who logged 2.5 hours on his 21st flight) and we were going for the towers. Jim, Norm and un-identified HGer over launch - photo by Wouter I borrowed Bev's Buzz and Sonic Vario (no digital readout) so it was guess-timation as to what height I left for Agassis Mtn. but I was struggling by the time I hit the cliffs behind the prison. I figured it out later that we had north wind spilling over the peaks causing some interesting rotors (ask Andy!) but good, strong lee thermals which I climbed past Agassiz Peak. Norm wasn't far behind at the same height and we boated along towards Harrison picking up nice thermals along the way. We overheard Martin H on his cheater ship (ATOS VR) on the way to Dewdney Mtn at 4600 feet (he made it past on the way to Mt. St. Benedict and returned to the Woodside LZ to gloat). Andy and Justin had already landed on the beach an hour earlier and they radioed that the winds were light and variable so I flew over the lake and tried a few SATs and spirals before landing in front of the Harrison Hotel. My Harrison Beach LZ far west from the Sand Castles - photo by Jim Reich After I landed I noticed Norm had crossed to Bear Mtn. and had a nice CU forming above him, so I encouraged him to keep going as the winds were unusually light. He was gone to the east in a few turns. Bev picked up the Harrison bunch in my Van (Andy, Justin, Thomm and me) and later we picked Derek K up at the Esso on the way back to Woodside. She then left to chase Norm and called from home that he was above Hope Mtn at about 9000 feet soaring nicely). Norm landed in a vacant field across from his home near Kawkawa Lake beyond Hope. He had to come back to Woodside to gloat later. Later reports had Julie, Kelly and several others up for over 2 hours! Our later student flights yielded some nice soaring and our students were above even more experienced fliers, so it was "big grins" all around! I took Justin's folks tandem and we had nice evening glass-off flights with great launches and landings and I think they are staying to get "signed-off" instead of going back to Australia?

Woodside Report - Andy and Neil G. flew around noon soaring amongst the clouds eventually landing at Riverside.
A great kiting day for Terry and Harold, newbies from Kamloops. Unfortunately, it was too strong to get their first flight but Andy and Norm were kind enough to do the "wind dummy" chores both landing at Harvest on two separate occasions.

Woodside Gloat Report - So Annelise and I blow some money and time and head over to Wooside on the
weekend to fly, and get sledders. | Tuesday, I come into the office back at the Ministry of Transportation after a year away at the Ministry of Labour and first thing I get told is that I'm travelling to the mainland for the rest of the week to deal with some stuff over here. I'm pissed, I hate travelling for work (I hate waking up in the morning and not remembering what city I'm in). I bring my wing. "Long story short", I get nearly two hours at Woodside, landing around 7. Pemby Jim Orava had been flying since around 10:30 AM top- landing every once in a while to roll a cigarette. Kevin Ault was also up for at least 2 hours. I was chasing him around figuring he was a recent FlyBC Chimp on a Buzz or Rush, determined not to let him outclimb me. No so pissed about travelling. Photos to follow..... - Bruce McG.

Woodside Report - lots of flights but not much altitude gained. Jack and Andy had a "best glide contest" off Woodside Launch flying straight out to Kilby Beach: Andy won easily on his new Boomerang Sport, with Jack launching moments after Andy but in a sinky cycle that had him starting out lower. Andy was past Kilby Store, Jack a few hundred meters east. I found them at Kilby Store enjoying a ginger beer.
| Later flights were rough and pilots flew out quickly. Woodside has proven to be the most reliable site this year (and last year too), for getting good high flights with mini-XCs for students to Harvest Market. I don't miss the days when we wasted trips to Whidbey and Blanchard when Duncan's closed the LZs in 2000, as these trips were mostly road trips as opposed to flying trips. Honduras Report - apparently the cops caught "the little turds" that stole Jeffrey's gear last month and he got his reserve back! Can Am Report (belated) - I got some photos from Jan Olsen and one caught my eye. An un-named pilot has devloped a new unique landing style, good for looking for contact lenses. worms, whatever is lost in the grass. Note the unique style - photo by Jan Olsen

Woodside Report - man, I am tired! Four tandems and light conditions to launch and land in. But the Magnum pulled it off every time even with a 225 lb passenger last flight.
| We had a great training day, no wind and light thermals so no down time for the students. Gretchen and Kelly flew 3-4 flights, Vicki had several tandems and her first solo flight at the end of the day. Edmond visited from Kelowna and asked why we had so many women flying? I said it was my charming personality and wit (but I think it is because of Colleen). Crikey! Steve Irwin dies at 44! By BRIAN CASSEY, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 20 minutes ago CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44. Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said. "He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time. Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said. Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter." First broadcast in Australia in 1992, the program was picked up by the Discovery network, catapulting Irwin to international celebrity.

Woodside Report - new students Kelly and Gretchen came out and were a quick study with the ground handling and were soon at launch. The fact that they had 9000 sky-diving jumps between them (as well as some base jumps), helped in the air. Kelly was thermalling on his 3rd high flight and got well over launch (the only one who got high all day despite many attempts). Bridal sounded similar, with smoke, haze and a capped inversion layer at launch height. Perfect training conditions all day.
