Agassiz BC Rain. Amount 15 mm. Becoming windy this morning. High 14. 500 metres As we found out last week, the original launch slot is the better place as it is bowl shaped and makes the winds flow better than the knob that was just clearcut. If anyone wants to develop an outflow launch, this is the idea place: 900 metres of altitude, leagal airspace, legal landing spots (Sandpiper Airstrip, Harrison Riverbanks), and only a 5 km drive directly to launch (even 2WD). Sumas is a hike up and is in the lee in NE winds, a waste of time with illegal landing and airspace issues. Even the District does not support its use due to the LZ. 10-30-15

| Agassiz BC Blanchard Forecast: Cloudy skies. Slight chance of a rain shower. High 14C. Winds S at 15 to 30 km/h. 700 metres I got packed up and was heading down the highway when Roger told me that it started drizzling there and the winds were not as forecasted, so I turned around in Agassiz and did some errands instead. When I got back to the Ranch, cloudbase had lifted enough to see launch on the new Hi Res Scope Camera and the trees were shaking pretty good, so it must have been soarable here. No pilots came out and I got busy with some other chores and then cloudbase dropped back to obscure launch. Time to buy a sled and go "Parasledding" with some friends in Golden? 10-28-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers. High 14. 1000 metres Only Tom C showed up but I was doing chores so I did not see if he flew. I had a guy show up mid-afternoon to look at the Prison Bus as he needed a transmission and some other parts. He took it home with him so our fleet is just one 2012 GMC Savana Van now. Meanwhile this week, some of our flying friends had some fun on their paramotors. Wyle E. and the flying lawn chair from Wyle E Coyote on Vimeo. 10-25-15

| Agassiz BC Mainly cloudy. Windy this morning. High 16. 700 metres I did meet a guy in Vanier Park to show him the Magnum 2 38 and he bought it, oddly the winds at Vanier were solid from the west, very laminar! 10-24-15

| Agassiz BC Increasing cloudiness this morning. Windy this morning. High 14. 700 metres We went to check out the new clearcut at the left spur off Pretty Creek Road, and the winds were very cross from the North. On to Horsefly Launch where the wind was coming straight up but only about 15 kph.
George got ready first and was off after a few inflations, and he maintained his altitude til out of sight on his way to the Ranch.
Chris was up next and after three tries he had a perfect launch and he headed to the Airstrip as he has lesss experience (15 flights) and he was an easy landing approach.
As Alexandre only has 5 flights we deemed this launch to be too advanced so we drove down together to find the guys. By now, Mike M found George at the Ranch as he misread my directions and ended up in Deroche as he came later. We met George and Mike at the Sasquatch Inn. Chris was hiking out to the Bridge and we picked him up there. Back up to launch again but it had gotten too light for this cliff launch at Horsefly and still too cross at Pretty Creek, but George tried a few times anyway and never got a solid wing.

| Agassiz BC Cloudy skies this morning will become partly cloudy this afternoon. High around 15C. Winds NW at 10 to 15 km/h. 700 metres Degas & Tommy were flying with the Eagles today.
Despite that it is like new shape, in the standard Orange/Blue colour scheme. I had a dodgy launch but got off right after Norm and we "duked it out" for 30 minutes, asnd Gary P joined in the fun too. Sometimes I was above them and sometimes the reverse, until I followed an eagle to a sinky area and could not climb out. We may have gotten to 1000 metres a few times, and the lift was a spicy +2.5 m/s. I had a nice landing at the training hill and was packed up as Norm came into the circle. Gary managed to top-land to drive his truck down, as Al launched. Al worked hard but did get above launch a few times, no report on whether he top-landed or not. Macfarlane Report - KVA, Brad H and Sam W scored a beautiful day hike and fly from the west ridge of Mt. Macfarlane on Friday ascending the steep DeJong trail in three hours to 1900 meters. Light cycles allowed for easy launching on the steep alpine meadow. Brad led the launch parade to show Sam where the action might be.
Always great to get out in the great outdoors with great friends. 10-22-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy with 40 percent chance of drizzle this morning then a mix of sun and cloud. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 14. 900 metres Good progress this week with trim installed around the door framing and paint completed and ready for the door installer who arrived at 9 am today.
Woodside Report - Woodside and Eagle Ranch were open today at 10 am for tandems & students, but we could not see launch til 1 pm. Denham brought Geoffrey out from Squamish, where they have been practice kiting an old 1989 beast of a paraglider Denham bought last year to kite with. I sent them out to the training hill with a SupAir EONA M and went to lunch with Delvin & Harry. When I returned, Geoffrey was doing perfect reverse launches, so we went inside for the landing approach briefings. We headed up to launch at 1 pm, to find Denis just getting ready and he took off and worked the lift getting in the "white room" a few times, but the lift looked very smooth.
Even the Duncan's field were lifty as Geoffrey had to do about 30 "figure-8s" to get down to the Ranch. He had a perfect landing and was packed up and waiting as I arrived back at the Ranch. We headed back up with a full Van and watched as Norm and others duked it out and watched Denis top-land.
Another gift from Mother Woodside! 10-21-15

| Agassiz BC Mainly sunny. Increasing cloudiness in the afternoon. High 15. 900 metres A group went up around 1 pm, headed by Kevin A and only Rod & Kevin got off before it blew down and started to drizzle. Adrian drove Kevin's truck back down. Rod dod get above launch for some time before the rain hit. I did not remember seeing rain in the forecast, so I looked again and Environment Canada had changed their forecast to include 60% chance of precip, but that forecast came a long time after I had done the SOD. 10-20-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy. Becoming a mix of sun and cloud this afternoon. High 17. 800 metres I took Shafi, Sam A, Sam from Aus, and myself up to launch and they had a nice flight with some soaring early with everyone heading out to the Ranch. My first tandem, Nina from Germany, arrived at noon. Her boyfriend had booked the flight today as they were camping at Kilby and it was her birthday on Monday so this was to be a gift for her. It was a perfect day for tandems and solos too, as when we took off cloudbase was just above launch but once out in the sun you could climb out and surf the clouds out front. Shafi was having a great thermalling day on the SupAir EONA, and he and Sam A were thermalling around for 15 minutes before heading out to the Ranch. Nina and I played in the clouds for 30 minutes, getting "whited-out" a few times. Benoit was out on his Alpina 2 "dukin' it out" with us. The thermals over the Construction Zone were very mellow and one could float around there for hours going up consistently.
Marco drove the Van down for us this round. The next tandem, Janelle, arrived right at 2 pm and we loaded up and took a full Van load up, this time with Bev & Norm offering to drive. The conditins were too good, so they both ended up flying. I launched right after Shafi, and we were thermalling together and he was doing very well.
The lift was amazing, in smoothness and strength for October 20th. No measurement on strength but I would guess a steady +2 m/s right to 'base at 1000 metres. Janelle and I went into the "white room" a few times but you could still see the sun and the ground below.
After an hour I tried a few top-landing passes but it was too lifty around launch, even with a low approach we would get yanked up. We saw Norm try a low pass and was kicking trees as the sink cycle hit. Martin N tried many times too and we finally all gave up and headed out to the Ranch. My GoPro was full as we flew out to the Ranch and it shut down after 1H20 so I am not sure how long the actual flight was, but Janelle got her money's worth today. After finding everyone, Bev went up in Shafi's car to retrieve and she launched Shafi for one more flight and drove down the Van so we could take one last load up before sunset. The last flight had Derek head up before us and he found little lift but Shafi got flight #4 in today before Dark and we got all the vehicles back down before dark too. What an amamzing day for everyone that came out! 10-19-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy with 70 percent chance of showers. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 15. 700 metres This will make the sail loft much warmer and cleaner, hoping to keep the bats outside next summer. A bad call on the rain though as it started a heavy downpour right at 4 pm. Prior to that the winds were very gusty as viewed through the new "FlyBC Scopecam" - a DLink Camera attached to a 60X spotting scope. 10-18-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 15. 700 metres After I made that plan at 6 am, everything looked positive. When I looked out the window at 9 am, it started to drizzle, but I did not cancel the day as the forecast looked good and NOAA showed the low clouds would part by noon. I had Logan, Shafi & Alexandre here and they were itching to fly. Also 3 tandems to do at noon, so we headed up and arrived on launch at 11 am, and we could just see the LZ. Shafi launched first having to do a forward launch in light winds, Logan next and Alex last with all perfect launches.
We went back up after they packed up at Eagle Ranch, and the tandems came too. It had gotten stronger but north NW. Denis launched the first tandem, followed by Colleen.
Logan launched next and started soaring but had to do "big ears" to maintain visual contact with the ground. Andrei offered to do a tandem so I could manage the students and driving duties and I ballasted him off with the lightest passenger and they went straight up and were not moving forward much at all, but they soared around for 20 minutes before heading to Harvest Market.
It was clearly too strong for Alex so we drove down. We had a bit of a break for lunch as the front tire on the new Van blew out and we could not get the spare down as it was jammed, so thankfully Eric G was in the 'hood and he lent me a tire off his truck. Thanks! We went back up in Alex's truck and Logan and Shafi flew again and before we could launch Alex, cloudbase dropped and we could not see the LZ. Alex had a good weekend on his Intro Course: 4 solos and a tandem and he plans to hike and fly soon! Don't forget next weekend is the Women's Fly-In in Chelan! Message forwarded from Iain Frew in Washington State. This is a super fun, low-key fly-in. Come in a costume to fly around in (make sure it's a warm one!) and keep the costume for the party on Saturday night. Prizes and food at the party too! It's that time of the year again folks, the end of season party at Chelan! Please join us at the annual Women's Fly-In at Chelan, October 24th and 25th. It's a Bi-Wing affair, with flying Saturday & Sunday, and a costume party Saturday night at the pilot's lounge of the Chelan airport. There will be bomb drop and spot landing contests at the soccer field in Saturday. Given all the fires at Chelan this year, lets show our support to this premier flying site and the Chelan community by having a great turn out this year, rain snow or shine! If you were at the fantastic flyin, you more than likely have your costume already! Saturday's evening party will include prizes for: Best male/female costumes Best couple's costume theme, and of course, Best Buns on the Butte; as well as for the flying competitions. Dinner is a pot-luck, with the annual Chili Cook-off providing the main course. It's a good opportunity to show off your favorite chili recipe. We'll also have a desert competition, with prizes for the best chili and the best desert. Please bring something to share. The NWPC will provide beer, wine, music and decor. We ask for a $30 donation per pilot, and $15 for accompanying non-pilot spouses or significant others. Register at the Chelan Falls soccer field/LZ or at the Party Saturday night. Proceeds will go to support our Chelan Butte site. The Women's Fly-In has always been a really fun weekend, and your presence will help make it so again this year. Time to put together your costume and tweak your chili recipe. Where: Chelan Airport Pilot's Lounge When: Set up at 6 pm, Chili contest and potluck at 7 pm. Music , drinking and dancing to follow We as always will have the traditional chili cookoff, which is always delicious. Looking for a volunteer to help organize that, please contact Iain , ifrew@hotmail.com, or any of the board. COSTUMES encouraged! It is a Halloween party after all. 'Listserv troll' costume, anyone? After we eat there will be music and dancing and costume contest voting. VOLUNTEERS needed: Iain and LeAnn will be bringing the party decorations and music setup, but they could use some help. We need folks to join us at the pilot's lounge at 6 pm to setup for the party and then folks to do some light cleanup after the party and then a good cleaning on Sunday morning. We are fortunate that the airport lets us use the pilot's lounge and we like to leave it cleaner than we find it to keep that goodwill. Chelan is beautiful this time of year with Autumn color and salmon in the river as you fly over on the way to the LZ. Even if the flying conditions aren't perfect, it is usually sunny and warm and there's always wine tasting in Chelan/Manson's many wineries. Come join your fellow pilots in the last Fly-In of the year. Hope to see you all there! 10-17-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers this afternoon. High 18. 700 metres Pretty sweet conditions on our Eagle Ranch Training Hill with 15 kph east winds and consistent, and within 30 minutes Alexandre was reverse launching like a pro! He got airborne on most launches on the Training Hill as he had a good committed run. By noon we decided to have Colleen take him tandem to show him how to control a wing in the air, and to practice the approach pattern. Tandems really are the fastest method to get someone ready for solo flights. Alexandre flew most of the flight and it was smooth as we were under the inversion layer. Claudia, Peter, Bev, Norm, George G were also out flying and it was a race to see who had the shortest flight time, as there was little lift. Peter pictured here.
We went back up again as soon as everyone was packed up and Alexandre got another flight just before sunset. Colleen had to interrupt her gardening to guide him in the last flight.

| Agassiz BC Sunny. High 23. UV index 3 or moderate. 700 metres After the framing job, I setup the new BlackHawl AirMax 125 Paramotor and ran it up, lots of power and very responsive throttle! Light too at less than 50 lbs. I chose to try her out using the SupAir EONA L cause there was no wind in the LZ, this wing is easy to inflate and very lifty. Perfect for todays conditions. I tried to reverse launch but no way in this wind, and the wing was not even laid out well after it fell back but it forward launched very well and I was off in about three steps and climbing fast. As I was breaking it in I spent 15 minutes at varying throttle settings climbing towards launch finding some leeside thermals here and there but as I got to launch altitude the Northeast wind was making it hard to get to launch as the windsocks were pointing straight at me, and it was getting lumpy in the lee. When I turned around to head back to the Ranch, I got there in 2 minutes, very windy from the NE. I went to Mill Road and there I was parked in North wind at 400 metres as a helicopter flew below me heading to Chilliwack Airport. As usual there was a light east breeze in the LZ when I circled overhead burning up the remaining fuel, and when it started missing from fuel starvation I dead-sticked it into the circle in no wind. Nice day for motoring as there was no free flying from Bridal or Woodside today. We have got to start work on the new NE Launch up Pretty Creek/Horsefly Road for these days. 10-15-15

| Agassiz BC Mainly sunny. Windy this morning. High 22. UV index 3 or moderate. 700 metres You can't have sunny days and warm temps this year unless it is blowing from the Interior, winds from the Pacific will cool the air and give us clouds. Revy Report - Dingo reports 1.5 hour flights at Mt Mackenzie today, still working up high. 10-14-15
|
| Agassiz BC Sunny. High 19. UV index 3 or moderate. 1000 metres Horsefly would have be a better call as it faces NE, but I was busy on a garage door project that needs to be completed by Monday. A couple of desperados did fly Woodside waiting a long time for thermal cycles but only got sled rides. McGuire Report - James and I had a nice 3 hr hike up to a south launch on McGuire.
Lovely fall day in the mtns. Great views of the Canadian and American border peaks. Landed by the truck to save a retrieve shuttle - Alex 10-13-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy. 40 percent chance of showers early in the morning. Becoming a mix of sun and cloud in the morning. Fog patches dissipating in the morning. High 18. UV index 3 or moderate. 800 metres Aaron & I kept ourselves busy setting up some scaffolding in the barn loft to prep for spray foam insulation and decking to seal out the bats next summer.
Chris & Johannes patiently waited for cloudbase to lift and when it was launchable we raced up and they were able to launch into nice wispy clouds.
We repeated this for three flights and by the last flight the sun was starting to set and cloudbase was dropping fast as Johannes flew off.

| Agassiz BC Mix of Sun & Cloud. High 17C. 1100 metres Depending on when you launched you could get 1 hour plus of soaring up to 1100 metres, and toplandings too! Denis, Martin N, Alex & Nicole were among the lucky ones. When a band of sunshine was swapped for high cirrus clouds the lift shut down and other pilots were handed extended sled rides.
Turn My Ship Around from Mikecyclone on Vimeo. Weather Station/Webcam Mystery Continues - George was hiking around/below launch today when conditions went tailwind and found the Solar Panel from the last iteration of the Weather Station. Odd that this was the one piece I could see someone wanting to steal as it would charge a trailer battery or any 12V system. This definitely makes me think someone just did not want the webcam up on Woodside as they thought it would impede their partying or nude-sunbathing? 10-10-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy. Rain at times heavy beginning this morning. Risk of a thunderstorm this afternoon. Amount 20 to 30 mm. Becoming windy this afternoon. Temperature falling to 13 this afternoon. 600 metres 10-9-15

| Agassiz BC Periods of rain. Temperature steady near 14. 600 metres Coyote Report - David posted this video of our fun in Cache Creek last week, his first flight and a classic approach and landing. Congratulations! Haeckel Hill Yukon Report - Haeckel Hill is one the most accessible and popular flying sites in Whitehorse. Cross-Country flights in excess of 100 km have been made from here. In Spring 2015, AYPH received funding from Lotteries Yukon to redevelop the launch. We contoured the slope, and brought in top soil and sod. The result is amazing! This project could only have been possible with support from Lotteries Yukon, Sodbusters “The Sod Farm”, Yukon Energy, City of Whitehorse and our tireless volunteers: AYPH pilots, family and friends. Pictures here of the work parties and final result. 10-8-15

| Agassiz BC Periods of rain. Temperature steady near 14. 600 metres The plan is to have a hard-wired DLink Camera viewing through a 60X scope to allow everyone to see conditions, but I can keep the scope and camera secured indoors. I was testing in Vancouver and could get a decent image of the North Shore Mountains from downtown. I will post an update when I get it installed at the Ranch. 10-7-15

| Agassiz BC Periods of rain. Temperature steady near 14. 600 metres Mt Cheam Outflow Report - during the outflow last weekend, KVA and a few others went up Cheam and were faced with NE winds and they waited and waited. Kev's Report - took advantage of the Mt. Waddington "Van Diego" to shuttle up Mt. Cheam on September 27th. Sam Waddington (owner of MW's and fellow paraglider pilot) and I arrived on the summit to find the predicted east winds which were quite strong, gusty and mixing with southerly thermals so we were quite prepared to hike down. We lunched with Sam's guided group, took the requisite summit photos and enjoyed the spectacular fall day. After an hour of assessing the wind, I elected to give the east face a try. It was smooth and steady at 15-18 km/hr right on the edge, but where the wing was laid out it was twitchy.
When Morten launched his speed wing, he immediately put it into such radical barrel rolls that I could not track him with my Iphone. However, he flew a couple of days ago and posted this: Meanwhile, I noticed a chopper circling the mountain and Morten ran into the photographer a few days ago, hooked me up and I'm sharing some of the most spectacular Cheam shots I've ever seen. Thanks to Ginnie Frede for the shots. 10-6-15

| Agassiz BC Cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers late in the afternoon. High 21. 800 metres Very light cycles but no tailwind. First flight had Chris going for Bill Best's field for a change of landing pattern.
We did two more flights in light winds and then it magically became soarable as we saw Bev & then Norm above launch as I collected the students. Sean G joined us mid-day and flew the new SupAir EIKO glider, launching it with style. The last flight was up to 20 kph SW wind at launch and old, so it was easy to ridge soar even out far from the slope.
But the students all made it out to Eagle Ranch with lots of altitude and not much turbulence at ground level. 10-5-15

| Agassiz BC Sunny. High 23. UV index 4 or moderate. 800 metres The road is cross-ditch free as Dorman is logging a new clearcut just NE of Horsefly Launch.
There is a gate, but I am sure it will be removed once the equipment is sent down the mountain after the logging is completed. I will contact Dorman about access this week. After lunch Clair wrote his P-2 Exam and got a near perfect score! One more flght and he is signed-off! Unfortunately we never got any inflow cycles at Woodside so we called the day around 3 pm. 10-4-15
|
| Agassiz BC Mainly sunny. High 19. UV index 3 or moderate. 1800 metres Craig, Lincoln & Dave were here for ground school briefings yesterday but the winds were not good so we sent them home by noon. But they were keen for a roadtrip so we dragged them along. The newbies were really good even in light winds at the bottom of Coyote Ridge, and they were ready to fly after an hour of launch practice. Mike M, Kevin McE & Clair joined us too. Kevin attempted to fly his new motor but tripped and broke his prop (normal stuff) and was out for the day. Up on Coyote Hill the winds were light SE and perfect for first flights and the new guys launched like long time pilots, with power & style! Mike & Clair did well too and they all got 3 flights each landing in the Ashcroft Manor back fields. Here is Clair setting up a landing at the bottom, photo by Kevin.
The last flight had some tail wind so we packed up and headed home hoping for a Woodside flight but when we arrived at 630 pm, it was light tailwind so we called it a day and went down to the Ranch to do a debrief. 10-3-15

| Agassiz BC Clearing this morning. Fog patches dissipating this morning. Wind becoming northeast 30 km/h then increasing to 40 to 60 this morning. High 20. UV index 4 or moderate. 800 metres We made good use of the Barn Classroom as we had 5 new students arrive and we went over the physics of flight and fitted harnesses in the simulators. I thought it got calm enough around 7 pm for Kevin to kite his wing but it got away on him and we spent a long while sorting it out in the sail loft, no damage, just a lot of twisted lines. The FlyBC Fleet is down to one new GMC Van now as the Nissan Atlas found a new home in New West. The prison bus is still here if anyone wants a project, good for a camper or ?? Good Ford 7.3 Diesel and driveline for sale, mechanically sound steering & brakewise. 10-2-15

| Agassiz BC Increasing cloudiness early this morning. 70 percent chance of showers this afternoon. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 16. 800 metres Shaun did all the heavy lifting while Alan & I mixed concrete in the holes. I did not count how many bags of concrete went in the holes but it was over 30. Lots of rebar and rocks went in too to secure the fill. Thanks to Jim N too as he arrived just in time for the clean up. Alan found the weather station system stashed in the brush below the parking lot. The vandals did not even steal it, they just cut the lock to look inside but did not take anything? This is getting weirder by the day, who would take this system down? Apparently someone also hacked the WCSC Line App and maybe no one else got the word about the work party, but thanks to Alan, Shaun & Jim N for helping me today. 10-1-15

| Agassiz BC Sunny. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 21. UV index 4 or moderate. 800 metres It was outflow to calm winds all the way to Mission, so I was concerned that we might not have good wind on the Hill, but we arrived to thermal cycles coming straight in and calm meteorological winds in the LZ. Sam & Andrew did a 2 Day Intro Course with us in April and came back to do another day between school courses at UBCO. They must have been visualizing about Paragliding all these months because they were better than ever at launching & landings. Flight after flight in Mission they had brilliant launches, good posture and committed runs. They did 8-10 flights before we packed up to head back to Woodside. We arrived back at the Ranch and loaded Sam, Andrew, Clair & Kevin into the Van and headed up. Jim N & Thomm McE came up too to do some launch grooming, with power tools & loppers. Thomm was busy trimming the brush out front while Jim cut down some new trees growing up on the south slope of launch (which impede launching due south in cross wind conditions).
Kevin followed next on his new Ozone Roadster II paramotor wing (prepping for paramotoring soon). His Paramotor Lessons will start on Sunday according to the wind forecasts. Sam & Andrew followed next and they had very nice extended flights as some thermals were popping off the Construction Zone. Sam landed right in the circle. During our second round Norm & Bev arrived and flew off and Norm got above the inversion for almost an hour.
By 6 pm everyone was done in. A big day! Congratulations to everyone for a job well done. And special thanks to Jim & Thomm for the launch maintenance! |
