Road Trip Report - Woodside was getting rained out, no flying expected for a week, so I did a roadtrip to Calgary to visit family & friends.

It was sunny and warm on Thursday but very windy at Cochrane so no one was flying. The next day I was doing some tree removal at my Mom's farm and it was very cold and foggy, again very windy so no flying there either. Winter is setting in fast here in Alberta.

Richard T sent me this nice video from Mt Cheam from last September, seems so far away now with all the rain.

Some Speedflying Action from Soboba, CA - not recommended for beginners for sure . . . the ground is very hard!

Valley Report - Woodside might have been flyable after noon as the rain stayed away. But we had mild outflow all day so I couldn't even get Kevin interested in a sled ride? Now we have a 7 day forecast of rain in the Fraser Valley.

Woodside Report - we met at 10 am at the Ranch and our 4 students: Scott, Whiskers, Karmen & Ian were here to fly.

We arrived on launch at 11 am and it was blowing from the SE and not launchable, but as the sun came out it got better. We waited for Lee & Martin N to come up and show us the air.

From October 2014
Lee launched first and it was a smooth sleddy, so off went Scott first and then Whiskers. Also nice smooth flights with great approaches and light wind landings.

I took Ian tandem so he could experience flying a paraglider first hand. He did well on the training hill yesterday but was not ready to solo yet. Tandems are the best way to build the confidence some folks need to commit to a high flight and each tandem is worth 5 solo flights in terms of knowledge transfer.

We had interesting winds coming in to land so we headed for a "no winder" at the Pro Circle to save the walking. Ian landed on his feet and ran it into the Circle.

We went back up and watched Martin & Lee sky out this time and Eugene launched into the gulley and was going backwards for some time. It was not hard to convince the students that is was too windy to fly for them. All three who launched made the Ranch okay but needed speedbar depite leaving at 1100 metres. Good choice not to fly for the students.

From October 2014
Later Derek took a group up and only Kevin & Martin flew. It was gusting to +50 kph in Abby, Bellingham was reporting +70 kph yet Woodside was calm and it was no wind at the Ranch? Spooky! Kevin flew out after an almost collapse, Martin also had an extended sledder and they thought the air felt weird.

We went for lunch at the Golf Course and it stayed calm there til dark, so whatever winds hit the west did not materialize here.

Woodside Report - we went to Heritage Park for some training hill fun but the winds were north, so on to Cherry Park where it was cross but we got some nice inflations done there.

Then back to the Ranch at 2 pm where we thought it was too windy on launch, so we did more training hill flights on our personal training hill with perfect east winds.

Scott was the only experienced student with 2 high flights a few weeks back and he was progressing well on the training hill at was Ian & Carmen (newbies).

We decided to go up the mountain at 4 pm when Norm, Bev & Lee arrived, as we now had wind techs!

At launch it was slightly cross from the north and maybe too strong for beginner flights, so we sent Lee off to check the air and he was soaring immediately trying to stay out of the clouds at 1000 metres.

From October 2014
Norm took off after Lee and headed to the north cliffs where he disappeared for some time.

From October 2014
Lee flew out to test penetration and got some turbulence over the Construction Zone and the ridge line, but he said it wasn`t bad. So off went Scott with a beautiful forward launch and he chose a different lfight path around the Construction Zone and hit no bumps, and he had a perfect approach right into the circle!

Next off was Jeff S who arrived late after a long tour of Savona and back to Woodside when he forgot to check the Site of the Day for where we were (Savona was blowing at 30-50 kph all day). He is flying his new Ozone Buzz Z4 after retiring his Rush I.

Then Carmen & I clipped in to do her tandem flight. We were test flying the new SupAir SORA Tandem, and I had not even been able to kite it as we have been so busy with students. It was really cross from the north now, but the SORA inflated nicely and off we went in a light cycle.

From October 2014
Oddly it feels more like 38 metre tandem than the actual 41 metres it is spec'ed at? Very easy to turn and bank over, nice spirals with easy exits. Must be the French Acro heritage? We will have it here for a few weeks to do demos before sending it to the US dealers.

From October 2014
When I came in high over the LZ there was zero wind, but the training hill sock showed south wind, so I came in from the north and had a brilliant no wind flare, unfortunately Carmen froze on final and her feet did not move so she was lying on her face as we landed. I was on my feet though, as the wing landed in front of us.

Bev decided to fly down leaving Ian in charge of driving down, and he was unsure of how to find the Ranch despite driving there this morning and also from Mission once more.

He called me on the phone after I landed saying the Van would not move. What he forgot to tell me is that he let it roll backwards down into the forest! Of course it would not move!

We had to get Lee to come back and I attached the Van to Lee's SuperTruck with a big logging chain and I was out in a few minutes. Thanks Lee's Towing Service - first Norm's car in Lumby this spring and now my Van at Woodside.

It was now 7:00 pm, so no more flying as it was pitch black, but a beautiful drive down the mountain on a clear night.

Savona Report - I headed to Savona and arrived at 3 pm to find very gusty NE winds (from 30-50 kph as forecasted).

Not a total loss as I met Derek who was driving to Salmon Arm for the weekend, and we did some launch maintenance on the Toilet Bowl Launch. Mowing and brush cleanup, so it is much safer for takeoffs now.

I also picked up the travel trailer and it is back at the Ranch ready for more roadtrips (ie Chelan next weekend for the Women`s Fly In 2014.)

It looks like Kamloops area is getting blown out all weekend, but the Woodside NOAA looks good.

Woodside Report - I was back at the Ranch after noon and it was outflow in the valley but cycles were coming in at launch.

Joe dropped by but he thought it was too wet on the ground for his wing.

Lee dropped in later and went up and waited on launch but as it shaded over the cycles went the wrong way, so he was denied.

The weekend looks like rain in the Valley so I am heading to Savona or Cache Creek for Saturday.

Roadtrip Report - we headed up-country to Savona and points east to do some work on the launches.

I met up with Denham & Eileen at the Savona Dump Ridge and delivered their new gear: Ozone Zero 17 & Element II, so they could fly while I worked.

From October 2014
They flew off 5 times at the Dump Ridge in light east winds (forecast was to get soarable but it never happened). I was trimming bushes & trees on the Toilet Bowl Ridge and it was blowing right up that slope as well? Got rid of some nasty dead snags near launch to make it safer.

From October 2014
After I was finished I showed them the Toilet Bowl Ridge and they flew off while I cut the last dead snag.

From October 2014
As I drove south to Spences Bridge for dinner it started to sprinkle but the winds stayed light all day.

The forecast for the next 10 days looks bad on the Coast but good in Savona, so we will be back for a beginner course next weekend.

Woodside Report - I had a border run to Sumas and arrived back Woodside after noon to hear Derek in the air enjoying a nice smooth sled ride.

Martin & Dale were at the Ranch when I arrived as Derek was heading inland and we hatched a plan to all fly and I would retrieve with Norm's Honda.

we were expecting some stronger inflow winds as a front approached the coast, but it was rather North on launch as Martin flew off.

Martin hit nothing but trashy, sinky air and he worked some stuff over Riverside but it was not pretty.

Dale waited until the clouds cleared and launched in a nice cycle and got "cloud-sucked" into the whiteroom but he got out over the clearcuts and was soaring around when I drove down to retrieve Martin at the bottom.

From October 2014
Dale looked high over the Maple Tree when I was driving down but when we got to the HG LZ, Dale was packing up by the gate. Apparently after I lost sight of him, he had a mini-SIV event over the flats with multiple collapses and he ended up in the Duncan's field. The winds on the ground were now pretty stiff too.

From October 2014
Dale was thankful for the SIV training this past July, and glad he was on a Buzz Z4. Glad I drove down!

Woodside Report - we started flying at 10 am after Denham, Eileen & Nicole had written their exams. Moto was here too to continue his P2 course on his shiny new Ozone Buzz Z4.

From October 2014
We arrived at launch with no fog and light inflow cycles and Moto flew off to check the air . . . and it was very smooth.

One by one the students all flew off with nice inflations and good flight paths and they are all landing unassisted.

From October 2014
We continued this pattern for 5 solos today for the students, and somehow Derek & I got in two tandems each for a really productive day.

Martin N flew in the middle of the day and scratched out 45 minutes landing at Riverside, but otherwise it was very stable and inverted, so great training conditions.

Wouter Sighting - Wouter has been flying tandems in Interlaken CH and despite the weather being so poor in Europe this summer he did 380 tandems!

From October 2014

Woodside Report - we headed up Woodside after 10 am and the day delivered some very nice flights for students & experts alike.

Nicole, Eileen & Denham started their first flights by 11 am, and we had excellent launching conditions and we had 2 flights done before 2 pm.

From October 2014
I took Sarah for a nice tandem flight for 30 minutes, thermalling with some nice bald eagles & Martin N, before landing smoothly at the Ranch while Martin N and others stayed up.

We headed back up and launched Denham right after Al and the Element 2 Denham was flying seemed to climb better than Al's Peak 3?

After 15 minutes of thermalling Denham headed out to find the wind stronger that he has experienced and he got drifted downwind, but he made the Ranch okay.

After that it was too gusty for students and we drove down after cloudbase shut us down.

From October 2014
We talked to Martin & Al after they landed and they were down to 9-10 kph on the way out so it was a good thing we didn't launch the students after Denham!

After 3 am tonight the lunar eclipse happened and I was able to take this shot. Not a SLR unfortunately.

From October 2014
Carl Direnzo 1970-2014 - our friend and past paragliding student Carl was found dead in his cabin near Slesse Park last week.

He had recently bought a motorbike and had a small crash that injured his foot and he was recuperating at home. No details of what happened yet.

He trained with us in 1999 up in Lumby and we have fond memories of him sleeping under our motorhome and saying "I can hear you!".

Carl was fond of acro paragliding and "hike & flying" so he was not seen much at Woodside. His favourite sites were Elk and other sites in the Chilliwack River Valley.

Mission/Woodside Report - Eileen, Denham & Nicole went to Mission Heritage Park with me this morning and we stayed until 2 pm, and they were getting some nice long flights and some great reverse kiting experience.

The new Baofeng Radios work pretty good, as I could talk to Kevin as he drove from Chilliwack to Woodside on Hwy 1!

We arrived back at the Ranch to hear Kevin saying to Martin N that he must have launched too early. We were expecting strong SW winds today, maybe too strong for students but there was no lift for Martin and he ended up in Riverside.

Kevin waited a bit before he launched and then it was all cloudsuck for him, so we waited at the Ranch on the training hill until it mellowed out. Kevin flew out to grab a ride up as it was too thermic for top-landing.

From October 2014
We arrived on top just before 6 pm and Eileen, Denham & Nicole all got in a solo flight in nice buoyant conditions. Kevin stayed and watched them launch and got some great pictures for us.

From October 2014
It was Denham's 3rd solo, Eileen's 2nd solo & Nicole's 1st solo. I was sure Nicole would do well as she is a commercial pilot & skydiver too!

From October 2014
Conditions were perfect with +10 kph inflow winds and less wind in the air so they all arrived quite high over the Ranch where they all had brilliant approaches and landings .

We raced back up for one more sunset flight arriving at 6:30 pm which gave us exactly enough time to fly and land before legal dark (7:07 pm). It is getting dark much earlier but we are enjoying the best training conditions this month! We raced back up for one more sunset flight.

From October 2014
All the students launched flawlessly and were heading out with 2 minute spacing and Denham passed Eileen so he had to do his approach over the cornfield to stay out of her way. Nicole was in first with Denham right after her as he was loaded up on a small Rush.

What a great productive day for everyone as they landed under a near full moon before dark.

Woodside Report - we spent an enjoyable & productive session at Mission's Heritage Park with Tsuru, Eileen & Denham and they got 6-7 nice training flights in perfect conditions and then we headed back to Woodside after noon.

By then Tonya was already hucking Chris off launch so it was flyable.

We arrived on launch for the first flights and Colleen took Eileen for a tandem and Denham did his first solo flight. Tsuru has 15 flights from a recent training session in Chamonix so she was ready to fly Woodside.

Alex & Nicole were out soaring around and continued to do so until many hours later when they both top landed.

Colleen, Denis & I did a set of three tandems at 2 pm when we sent the students for lunch as it looked too rough for beginners (and it was pretty strong +2 m/s or more).

It was an amazing day right til dark, which is now happening at 7:07 pm.

Rod was test flying his new Supair Delight Harness and he looked pretty sporty!
