Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Rain ending near noon then a mix of sun and cloud with 30 percent chance of showers. Wind becoming southwest 40 to 60 km/h this morning then diminishing to 20 this afternoon. High 8. UV index 1 or low. 240° @ 20 kph after 1 pm 800 metres 11-29-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Mainly sunny. Increasing cloudiness late in the morning. Fog patches dissipating in the morning. High 8. UV index 1 or low. 040° @ 10 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Saturday brought us puffy CUs and great lift and today was just light wind sledders. But folks flew. Colleen got one flight in before it started to blow down hard. She managed to extend the flight by thermalling over Duncan's cow barn at 150 metres. I did some more trail work on the trail from the 3 km spur road and flagged the bottom entrance and brushed out the trailhead, while Bev and Norm hiked down from the top. Norm removed some log debris on the way down that he said was quite slippery when wet. The new trail should cut off some distance and time for hikers. I will keep working on the trail as days become less flyable and we have no students to train til March. We found some sharp dressed men on launch too today! 11-28-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers early this morning then a mix of sun and cloud. High 9. UV index 1 or low. 200° @ 5 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Conditions were light on launch but very good in the air with many CUs to show one the way "UP". Lots of eagles too thermalling all over. An extremely good day for the end of November! This is what CanadaRASP predicted, lift to 1000 metres and light inflow winds. Here is Martin N in front of launch under one of those nice CUs. Derek logged 1:30 and went for a second flight later. Martin N was satisfied with 2:30 and only one flight! Incident Report - We had one tree landing incident when an "un-named pilot" took off with a tangle and ended up in the trees north of launch. I went down to help him out and was going to get a climbing rope as his rescue kit had a tangled mess of line due to improper storage. I was almost back the the scene with a rope commandeered from Tom C, when the pilot fell while descending out of the tree. Search & Rescue were called as he had a hard descent out of the tree and he was complaining about back pain. We ran out of daylight and the injured party was carried on stretcher down to the 3 km logging spur road as that was easier than hauling him up the hill in the dark. The trail from the spur road is now cleared and marked as I had my chainsaw in the Can Am and I used it to break trail for the SAR attendees. It should shave some time off your hikes in the snow. 11-27-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Mainly cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers this morning. High 10. UV index 1 or low. 240° @ 25 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Derek was meeting at the Woodside Inn at 2:30 pm so we tagged along. I brought my Sun Peaks kit: Ozone Swift 5 L, SupAir Radical 3 harness and a helmet. Colleen brought her normal kit. We arrived to launch to find it quite cold and gusty from the NW. After waiting around for 30 minutes, Norm and Martin N laid out. Norm needed some help off launch, provided by Derek, video at 11. The air was quite turbulent and Martin was able to thermal despite the cloud cover but it was just not looking that fun and we were already frozen by the time Kevin had launched. So we drove down. Kevin reported getting to 820 metres where he was only getting 5-7 kph forward speed on an Ozone Mantra 7 loaded up, so he opted to head to Harvest. We had lots of cars at the bottom so Bev and Norm drove Kevin's truck to go find him and we went home to warm up. Dress warm if you are coming flying this weekend. 11-26-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Rain. Amount 5 to 10 mm. Becoming windy late this afternoon. High 9. 240° @ 40 kph after 1 pm 800 metres The blackberries and the stump are now gone, ready for levelling and re-seeding to keep the blackberries down. Net result is a 1550 foot runway from N-S for small aircraft and HG Trikes. 11-24-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Mainly cloudy. 60 percent chance of showers this afternoon. High 6. UV index 1 or low. 040° @ 9 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Elk Report - Claudia and Pete joined the Elk Crew and had some sweet ridge soaring in the snow! She says she could have soared all day on her new Ozone Ultralite 4 but she was worried about getting rained on so headed out early. 11-21-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: A mix of sun and cloud. Fog patches dissipating in the morning. High 10. UV index 1 or low. 040° @ 9 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Forecast said light NE winds but sunny so the hope was that the clouds would clear and some thermals would offset the catabatic flow. We arrived to pretty cloudy skies around 1 pm. One student (not ours) flew off into the clouds deliberately avoiding a big clear opening but he made it out to Riverside. A fairly large turnout of pilots today as it looks like the last flyable day of November. Colleen even put her keyboard down and flew today! I brought up an Ozone Ultralite 4 to fly as I knew launch conditions would be dodgy, but Claudia borrowed it and flew off with it and it left with her at the end of the day. I drove down as we had a big work project to complete. Recent vandalism has made the old HG ramp unsafe as they tore up the ramp sloping angle iron and board leaving a sharp edge to catch wayward pilots plus the footings were loose. A pilot almost hit the sharp edge last week so we decided to remove the ramp before a pilot or spectator gets hurt. It didn't take much jacking with a bottle jack and it was all loose and five of us lifted it and tossed it into the trees. It is far down the slope and out of harms way. If the trees out front are ever dropped, we can build a new ramp for the hangies. 11-20-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Showers. High 8. UV index 1 or low. 240° @ 29 kph after 1 pm 800 metres The new neighbours are starting to clean up the property west of us and there was a faller and big 210 Excavator taking trees and buildings down. I asked them to take down the old rotten Maple Tree on the west property line as they are taking the rest of the trees bordering our two properties to make room for a new cedar nursery. The tree faller makes art projects and wooden bowls and was glad to get some solid wood from the two maples he dropped today but mostly it was firewood. The runway will be extended next spring and the views to the west will be better as the rest of the trees get removed this weekend. 11-19-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers changing to 70 percent chance of showers near noon. Risk of thunderstorms early this afternoon. High 7. 240° @ 35 kph after 1 pm 800 metres But someone had a nice flight at Savona from an unusual launch spot landing at the Steelhead Campground . . . go Mickey! This is why Savona is so good in the spring and fall months, far away from the Coastal rains. The Cessna Skymaster has been in the shop in Pitt Meadows for a week or more getting the annual done. Some parts delays as we needed a new fuel injection pump ($$$) and a new cylinder for the front engine ($$). But it is all coming together. One of the important performance items I did was to remove the unservicable de-icing boots and replace them with satin black paint which gives and additional 5 mph of airspeed with less drag. Cynthia sent me this picture after the paint job was cured and the plane moved out to the ramp waiting for the pump. She hangs out at CYPK attending to her plane and hangar! 11-16-2020 to 11-18-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Cloudy with 30 percent chance of showers this morning. Rain beginning this afternoon. Amount 10 mm. Becoming windy this afternoon. High 7. UV index 1 or low. 040° @ 25 kph after 1 pm 800 metres 11-15-2020

| Woodside Forecast Savona Forecast: Mainly sunny. Increasing cloudiness late this afternoon. Wind up to 15 km/h. High plus 3. Wind chill minus 5 this morning. UV index 1 or low. 240° @ 15 kph after 1 pm 800 metres We took Hwy 1 home as the Coquihalla was closed at time due to accidents at the Snow Shed, so lots of heavy truck traffic both ways as traffic diverted, but Hwy 1 was clear and dry. We may have to head back to Sun Peaks after Wednesday because the coastal weather looks dismal. 11-14-2020

| Woodside Forecast Savona Forecast: Mainly sunny. Increasing cloudiness late this afternoon. Wind up to 15 km/h. High plus 3. Wind chill minus 5 this morning. UV index 1 or low. 040° @ 15 kph after 1 pm 800 metres We took the CanAm Defender out on Sun Peaks Road from P-6 and almost got stuck. The ski racers are up on top training so the lift was operating but only if you had a race pass so no flying for us but the puffy CUs looked inviting. The season opens November 21! 11-13-2020

| Woodside Forecast Savona Forecast: Snow changing to rain showers this afternoon. Snow level rising to 700 metres this afternoon. Snowfall amount 2 to 4 cm. Wind becoming south 20 km/h gusting to 40 this afternoon. High plus 4. 040° @ 40 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Apparently the Coquihalla Hwy was quite dangerous too. It looked possibly flyable at Woodside but snowy, with strong SW winds. I had time to make a small video of Brad's progression to P-2 this past week. My editing missed one small expletive I uttered as he was getting dragged, so my apologies! Brad did very well during his 5 days of training and was landing like a pro on most of his flights despite the small landing areas in Savona. 11-12-2020

| Woodside Forecast Savona Forecast: Cloudy. 40 percent chance of flurries in the afternoon. Wind becoming east 30 km/h gusting to 50 in the morning. High plus 3. Wind chill minus 11 in the morning. UV index 1 or low. 040° @ 40 kph after 1 pm 800 metres But it was beautiful and the rain held off til after 1 pm when I headed back to Sun Peaks. I was chatting with Kevin and Alex through YouTube about creating a trail from the 3 KM spur road up to launch through the North Forest beside Woodside Launch. There is an old skidder trail that has debris on it but we could move it with a work party and some chainsaws to create a shortcut to launch. Maybe the wrong time of year as more snow dumped on Woodside last night. I could volunteer some tractor time with the front end loader to help move some debris, but not if it is snowy! 11-11-2020

| Woodside Forecast Savona Forecast: A mix of sun and cloud with 30 percent chance of flurries early in the morning then sunny. High plus 4. UV index 1 or low. 040° @ 10 kph after 1 pm 800 metres The weather was nicely flyable with light east winds and puffy CU but we had shopping to do for condo lighting. Meanwhile back at Mother Woodside the "Desperados" were assembling for their "hike & fly" missions. The road up is quite icy at the 3 km mark so beware. I saw Don launch on his Gin Carrera when I checked the webcam just after lunch. It looked quite snowy on the webcam and in some Facebook videos pilots posted but nice on the ground. KVA sent us this tidbit. 11-10-2020

| Woodside Forecast Savona Forecast: Snow ending this morning then mainly cloudy with 40 percent chance of flurries. Amount 2 cm. High plus 3. UV index 1 or low. 240° @ 5 kph after 1 pm 800 metres I arrived in Savona to find the forecasted light SW winds and we headed right to the Toilet Bowl. Light winds meant all forward launches today for Brad, after yesterday's strong East winds all day. We did four flights off the Toilet Bowl Launch and then headed up to Mid Launch after it cleared of cloud. Brad is doing very well with his landing approaches and he is getting in the cleared areas most times. The snow was pretty deep in places but the Defender is fast at doing retrieves and we were stuffing Brad's new NOVA Prion4 in the trunk between flights. Not much wind at Mid Launch but we got four flights off there after waiting for cycles. Back to the Toilet Bowl launch area as the winds picked up to maybe 10 kph but we still focussed on forward launches today. By 3 pm Brad had done 15 flights! 11-9-2020

| Woodside Forecast Savona Forecast: Increasing cloudiness early this morning. 60 percent chance of flurries late this afternoon. Wind becoming east 20 km/h this afternoon. High plus 1. UV index 1 or low. 040° @ 20 kph after 1 pm 800 metres We drove up the hill in the Can Am and setup the Nova Prion4 XS and did some kiting, but the muscle memory is not there yet and wrong inputs were much more effective in the strong wind. I broke out the AirDesign Susi 3 - 13 and at 11 projected metres it is rock solid even in gusts. After 30 minutes of kiting the Susi 3, Brad was back to the Prion4 and flying! Brad had 10 great flights by 2 pm and I could see the snow was closing in from the West so we left. 11-8-2020

| Woodside Forecast Savona Forecast: Sunny. Wind northwest 40 km/h gusting to 60 diminishing to 20 gusting to 40 near noon. High plus 3. UV index 1 or low. 240° @ 20 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Today was way too windy for flying but we had a good day of ground handling in Ashcroft and Savona with decent wind in the parks. When we got to the Toilet Bowl Ridge at 10 am it was blowing +40 kph SW with higher gusts. Not even safe on a 13 metre speedwing. When I checked Ashcroft weather, it was blowing 15 kph NE, so we headed there. It was certainly stronger when we got there but it was manageable and great for reverse kiting practice. After a few hours of kiting in Ashcroft we headed back to Savona and there was a point mid-way between the two locations where the wind was calm so we had hope but when we got back to the Toilet Bowl it was still gale force winds just on the ridge but not so windy at the Lake level. We went to the Savona School field and the wind was great and Brad managed to perfect his technique and he was ready to launch. we waited til 4:30 pm and the wind never calmed down at the Toilet Bowl but there is a switch tonight to NE winds so we will be on the Dump Ridge for flights early tomorrow. 11-7-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Sunny. High 11. UV index 2 or low. 040° @ 20 kph after 1 pm 800 metres There is a possible launch spot but it may not be a soarable face, so you would have to launch and go right towards Harrison Lake to connect with the cliffs there in outflow winds. We went back to Woodside Launch and there were up cycles at 2 pm. Brad had one attempt but the wing overshot and collapsed and we reset it and then it was all over as the east wind was back after the sun got shaded by cloud. We went back to the Ranch to do a repair on Thomas' wing and when Thomas was kiting to check the rigging it was too strong for Brad for sure. 11-6-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Sunny. High 11. UV index 2 or low. 040° @ 20 kph after 1 pm 800 metres We started in Cherry Hill Park because it was North winds everywhere and over 60 kph at Eagle Ranch. The wind here was light east so we got some kiting in but no flights. Brad was doing well in light winds! We headed to Heritage Park where we started there on the bottom flats and kiting was better due to stronger winds from the East. And then all of a sudden there was no wind, so we went to the top of the hill and it started blowing up the slope! Brad got 4 flights off the top before we headed back to the Ranch. Back at Eagle Ranch we had strongish NW winds and Brad kitied til dark perfecting his reverse launches. 11-5-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Periods of rain. Amount 5 to 10 mm. High 15. 240° @ 30 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Derek had a day off and he organized Martin N, Bev, Norm to meet at Eagle Ranch at 2:30 pm. My new student Brad arrived for his first ground school session and we all went up in the Defender. We arrived to find Sean T on launch clipped in and waiting for a lull. He had been up there since 1:00 pm but had to wait for the gusts to die down. Sean launched around 3 pm and climbed out fast. It was mostly ridge lift so one had to stay in close initially to get above launch. Everyone launched and had good flights until they got cold. This is Derek & Martin soaring after launching with Derek flying an Ozone Alpina 2 ML cause Bev took his Swift 5 to replace her Swift 5 ML that was recently sold. 11-4-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Periods of rain. Amount 5 to 10 mm. High 15. 240° @ 30 kph after 1 pm 800 metres This process reminds me of why paragliding and paramotoring is so much less expensive than General Aviation. Everything on a Cessna needs to be "certified parts" which means costly! We found a few snags and they are being dealt with. My part on this annual was removing the "de-ice boots" which were "unservicable" due to aging. Boots are now gone and the adhesiver removed ready for painting this weekend. 11-3-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Rain at times heavy. Amount 30 to 40 mm. Temperature steady near 10. 240° @ 30 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Chore Day Report - FlyBC is closed this week as a huge front comes in this week, but we are shipping gear and organizing one last P-2 session for Savona starting Saturday. The Cessna T337B is in the shop getting the annual done and it is a big job. The aircraft has de-icing boots for "flight into known icing" but they are unservicable and I decided to remove them as they cost some speed penalty and add weight. They are basically two layer rubber panels that inflate and deflate to shed ice but smart pilots don't fly in mountain icing regardless and my IFR rating lapsed many years ago. The only way to remove the boots is to peel them off and try to get the contact glue to release from the leading edges. Good news is these are quite old and they peeled away with some cutting and channel lock pliers. This is what the plane looked like before I started. I started peeling at 11 am and by 4 pm I had the glue removed from the tail section and the left wing using "PEERCO ADHESIVE REMOVER - 321" - which is a lemon based product that disolves contact adhesive without affecting paint or plastic surfaces and it doesn't burn your skin. But it takes some elbow grease! This is what the left over adhesive looks like before the Peerco treatment. I will post more pics of what the bare wing looks like after removing the adhesive. The plan is to paint the leading edges with a "go fast paint" to improve speed and fuel economy but COVID has limited our destinations this year. 11-2-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: Sunny. Fog patches dissipating early in the morning. High 14. UV index 3 or moderate. 160° @ 6 kph after 1 pm 800 metres Martin N, Norm & Bev arrived at 1:30 pm, so I had to drop tools from Colleen's Yoga Studio project and take them up the mountain in the Chevy Tracker. The Can Am trailer is getting beefed up springs this week so no way to get to the bottom of the hill. Light cycles from the SE at launch but they all got off and today they were competing in the 2020 Best Glide Contest. We often do this on a lame, stable day with no wind. Takeoff and head straight west and see how far you get. Martin went first and landed on the dyke. Bev went next and landed next to Martin. Norm went last and circled over Kilby Campground before landing in the field just east of the park. The amazing thing is that the 2020 Ozone Swift 5 (EN-B) gliders now glide as far as the 2010 Ozone R10 competition glider (un-rated comp) from only 10 years ago. A correction was noted for Saturday's flights - Claudia logged 50 minutes on her Swift 5 at Woodside and Peter got 45 minutes on his new Ozone Delta 4. 11-1-2020

| Woodside Forecast Woodside Forecast: A mix of sun and cloud. Clearing near noon. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 12. UV index 4 or moderate. 040° @ 4 kph after 1 pm 800 metres We had a few tandems to get done and I delayed them til 1 pm, but pilots were launching solo by noon and getting short, smooth flights. Dominik came out after being away all summer and showed us how to do a no-wind reverse. Derek took the first tandem at 1:30 pm and while it was short they had a great launch, flight and landing at Eagle Ranch. Andrei took Emily for her Birthday tandem at 2:30 pm and they also had a great no-wind launch. We did not go up again after 3 pm as it was just so lame, totally inverted but sunny and warm. |
