Agassiz BC A mix of sun and cloud. High 23. UV index 6 or high. Curtis went first on the second round of flights just before noon and it was already getting "blown out" as he was getting some turbulence on the approach to Eagle Ranch. He had a nice landing but I did not want to push it for the other students as it was just going to get worse so we drove down as Denis, Kevin & Bill did the first set of tandems landing at Harvest Market. The students went kiting for a few hours as it was not calming down, and we went back up for the last set of four tandems at 3 pm. Denis, Tonya, Bill & I flew and it was strong launching conditions as I ballasted each pilot off and I was left with the lightest passenger and we waited for a lull and got it just as Oni arrived on launch so he offered me some ballast assistance and we got off nice and safely. The lift even for the last tandem flight was strong and we were soon at 1100 metres and maintained this all the way out past Riverside before heading to Harvest Market where the other tandems had landed. We arrived at Cemetary Hill at 1000 metres and flew over to Hopyard Hill to lose height and still had to spiral hard to get down. Nice landings for all on this flight. 5/30/14

| Agassiz BC A mix of sun and cloud. 30 percent chance of showers late this afternoon with risk of thunderstorms. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 23. UV index 6 or high. Denis & Derek helped me by flying 2 tandems each while I was guiding students.

| Agassiz BC Showers. High 16. UV index 3 or moderate. Then I spent some time trying to figure out our new DLink Web Cams which are not as easy to setup as the old one that died, so I used the DLink Service instead of trying to fix the IP address and it works so far. Link is same as before above in the Blue Boxes. It stopped raining around 2 pm, and we had light inflow cycles at launch but I thought I should mow some Landing Circles so pilots can pack up in a dry place. The sun even came out on the mountain around 7 pm! It looks very busy for me this weekend as students come out of the woodwork and tandems keep coming out too! A good day for GIN pilots at the World Cup in Coeur de Savoie, France: designer and test pilot Torsten Siegel won the day with Aaron Durogati 3rd. Torsten now leads overall! Results Here! 5/28/14

| Agassiz BC A mix of sun and cloud. 30 percent chance of showers this afternoon. High 18. UV index 6 or high. Rod got 5 solo flights and hours of kiting at the Dump Ridge and later in the Toilet Bowl. We started out the day with Katherine & Ryan for their first day of lessons and Ryan was a "natural" kiting our APCO Karma like a pro. He was not convinced he wanted to fly off the Dump Ridge so we are taking him & Katherine to Mission on Friday if the rain dries up by then. I even got a small ridge soar at the Dump Ridge testing out the air and it was typical windy Savona but laminar and I was able to top-land 'cause I hate hiking up. We headed up to Deadman's PG Launch to take Katherine tandem, but it was gusting up to 35 kph so we drove back down to the Toilet Bowl for more flights where it was smooth and perfect for reverse launches for Rod. The weather forecasts all had a Special Weather Advisory: South Thompson Rain for Wednesday with amounts possibly reaching 25 mm. A slow moving upper low is forecast to track through the southern interior on Wednesday. Bands of showers associated with the low are already moving through the above mentioned regions and will continue through Wednesday evening. Generally, rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 mm are expected by late Wednesday evening. However, embedded thunderstorms may result in some regions seeing higher total rainfall amounts - possibly reaching or exceeding 25 mm. There is still some uncertainty with the exact location of where the higher amounts will occur. Due to recent snowmelt some regions in the southern interior are under flood watch or high stream flow advisory and expected rainfall amounts may exacerbate the situation. The public is advised to monitor future weather forecasts as warnings may be required. Please monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at May 27, 2014 tracklogs in Canada. Some very nice flights! Some nice videos shot by Tonya this weekend at Woodside. 5/26/14

| Agassiz BC Cloudy. Rain this morning then 40 percent chance of showers this afternoon. Fog patches this morning. High 17. UV index 4 or moderate. Derek said they were getting to about 1000 metres on the North Cliffs but it was sweet lift everywhere. I had a tandem to do with new student Roy and I was trying out the new Gin Fuse tandem and we got gift-wrapped on launch as Roy could not keep his grip on launch and got pulled back a few times. Once in the air it is a sweet ride with nice turns and light brake pressures. Very agile and spirals hard! We got to watch Martin top-land to drive our truck down after spending a long time trying to get down. We flew to the North Cliffs and made it over the towers in one pass, and after Roy started shivering we headed out with him flying us. We arrived over the Ranch at 700 metres in strong south winds. Landing the Fuse in no wind was easy too as we came in to the Big Circle. We are heading to Savona for a few days for a new batch of students, see you back here on Thursday. A big thanks to Alan D & Klaus W who spent several days cleaning out the ditches at Bridal Falls LZ after the beavers claimed the area this spring. 5/25/14

| Agassiz BC Cloudy. Periods of rain beginning this morning. Amount 5 mm. High 14. Below a rare sighting of Jim flying solo taken by Colleen (also flying solo).
DAVE TURNER COMPLETES SIERRA CROSSING - Dave Turner has just completed an 820km traverse and crossing of the California Sierra, starting at the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara and finishing in Verdi, Nevada. Flying in the western USA can be very demanding, with big air and large expanses of wild terrain. Dave’s route was no exception, and his trip is very impressive considering that he did it solo and unsupported. There are various versions of vol-biv flying, and the solo/unsupported kind, which crosses big and uninhabited terrain, is probably the most severe. Dave reports that his Ozone LM5 performed admirably in some serious turbulence. Ozone News Here 5/24/14

| Agassiz BC A few showers ending this morning then mainly cloudy. High 21. UV index 6 or high.
Some idiot decided it would be fun to get liquored up and drive through all the farm fields north of Hwy 7 here in sunny Harrison Mills and ended up in the ditch near the Old Orchard Campground. The cops had no proof of who was the driver so no charges, but the farmers are pretty pissed off.
I took new student Craig out for a nice soaring tandem around 1 pm, and got to 1000 metres in a few turns. This day turned out amazing despite the poor forecasts. It got windier and more thermic and some of the landings at the Ranch were interesting as pilots who came in too high got the Scary Corner treatment. We had a set of 4 tandems to do around 3 pm, and the plan was to head to Harvest Market but as we soared around the winds calmed down into nice SW with nice smooth thermals. Derek was following Normando and got super-high with a 210 lb passenger who lives just across the river at Little Mountain, I am sure he could have flown the guy home! I was ``dukin it out`` with Andrew B on his tandem but I took the lightest of the 4 guys and it showed on our sinkrates as he was on a Magnum 38 with a big guy, but we had fun thermalling all over Woodside with little sink and light winds. Landings at the Ranch were smooth after 4 pm. The students had all gone home, so we decided to go for an evening flight. I had to dry out the Nova Mentor 2 XL as it got wet in Merritt & at Woodside last night so I took it and a Delight Harness for a spin with the plan to top-land to retrieve the truck. Bev & Norm also came up and Bev had a brilliant launch into the strongish SW launch winds and started to climb out and fast. She was soon above Norm!
I took off and was soaring with Colleen when Derek top-landed and offered to drive my truck down. Andrei had been in the air on tandem and ended up in Harvest Market but his truck was on top, so I dropped in for a super nice top-landing right in the middle of launch deep-stalling in from 12 feet, what a nice wing! ps: there was no damage from Tonya landing on it!

| Agassiz BC Rain at times heavy. High 15. I chose Merritt as the winds were forecast to be SW and Savona is too far away in the new Nissan Atlas which is a good workhorse for Woodside but doesn't have the highway power to pull a heavy load on the mountains. If it was going to be N or NE winds then Ashcroft is closer but as we pulled into Merrit the winds here were light and SW as forecasted and we headed up the hill. I avoided the tank-trap mudhole by circumnavigating through the forest and we got partway up the hill before I powered out. Maybe I need to install lower gears? We hiked up the last part of the hill and the mud there is drying out fast. We got Walter in the air first with a perfect launch and he bobbed & ridge soared his way to the intended LZ and had a nice landing way oput by the water trough. Next up was Rod, who also had a great launch and flew the same course and also found lift and made it to Walter's spot but did a downwind turn at the last moment as he misread the wind. Two for two!
After that we got Dave to launch and he could not penetrate at all but got some nice bunny hops and some top-landing practice. We hiked back to the truck and on the way Ian got to do some bunny hops down the back slopes and he had nice control, landing partway down the hill. As we drove down to Nicola River, the winds were getting up to 35 kph and gusty, so back to the Ranch. We drove into Agassiz in the rain, where I dropped off the guys at Jack's Restaurant for lunch while I did a few errands and when we were done lunch, the sun came out over Woodside and we got some nice evening soaring in and the first high flights for Ian & Dave.

We went to Agassiz Rec Centre to kite until 5 pm and the guys are looking good! 5/20/14

| Agassiz BC Mainly cloudy. Clearing late this afternoon. High 21. UV index 5 or moderate. We came back to the Ranch around 1:30 pm, to find folks soaring around Woodside. Martin N was up on launch and took off and climbed out nicely on his new shiny Rush 4 and was soon near cloudbase.
We launched and headed upwind to the north and got zero lift, mostly sink. So we headed across the slope toward the South Knoll and caught some lift there that we worked back to launch height. The north winds were making thermalling a chore and it was more like Figure-8s upwind to stay in the lift but we hung in for 30 minutes before heading out to the Ranch.

| Agassiz BC Cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers. High 18. UV index 4 or moderate. I took Rod & Walter to the Heritage Park Training Hill and they were doing a few laps until noon when we headed back to the Ranch. Meanwhile, Derek & Tonya signed in the tandem passenger/students and were heading up the hill with one of the passengers friends driving for Derek. Excellent launch & landing conditions for extended sledders for the tandems. Martin N, Dale C & Normando were soaring nicely between our tandem rounds and Martin even made a low attempt at Sasquatch on his new Ozone Rush 4 L after a few hours.
Round two of the tandems and Derek & Tonya did a great job again, as we continued kiting with an additonal student - Clair from the Island arriving to work on his kiting too. Then for the last round, Tonya took Walter tandem and I took Rod tandem for their orientation flights and we had nice smooth flights. There were a few top-landers at the end of the day saving some retrieves, and the conditions were perfect on launch for those pilots. 5/18/14

| Agassiz BC Cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers. High 17. UV index 4 or moderate. Lots of black development around the Valley but no rain despite two days of rain in the forecast. We arrived to find tandem passenger Charles had come regardless of telling him not to waste the trip out, but we ended up taking him tandem an hour later. We got to launch with Alex, Robin, Bev, Norm and the tandem gear and Alex went first to test the air for us and reported it was smooth. We just had to wait for lulls. Martin N was test flying his new Ozone Rush 4 and was out with Derek, Tom M and some unidentified pilots who all made a run to the Ranch as the sky looked like it was going to rain. They had to work hard to get down to safe landings. In the end it did not rain. We had a nice smooth launch and we were climbing through 1000 metres near the South Knoll as we saw Alex & Norm head SW over the Fraser River towards Chilliwack.
Every thermal had a special fragrance as the farms are spreading manure. We had a nice landing at Harvest and Charles was not disappointed with his trip out today. Robin, Alex, Max and George also landed at Harvest Market.

| Agassiz BC Cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers. High 17. UV index 4 or moderate. When we left we saw Shawn K from Whitehorse climbing easily above woodside. I got a text later that he landed near Hope! I think the problem with long weekend forecasts is that the senior meteorologists are on holidys and the juniors make some wrong calls. 5/16/14

| Agassiz BC A mix of sun and cloud. High 20. UV index 7 or high. The forecast was for windy conditions later, but the wind arrived early so Dale got some nice ridge soaring in, getting above launch easily.
Walter was new today so we did some ground school, then off to Mission to Heritage Park Trianing Hill. It was very windy, with whitecaps on Harrison Bay as we headed west. At Heritage Park ti was west so Sean got one flight off the hill and we decided it was better to reverse kite on the flats. Walter was amazing! Never touched a paraglider before today and he was kiting reverse and doing corrections intuitively and running the length of the Park despite gusty conditions. Sean did equally well and had developed a nice form when running with the Element II M.
Dale & Shawn K went up the mountain around 7 pm with Norm & Bev driving for them and they stood down as it was +30 kph with gusts. "Better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air . . . than being in the air wishing you were on the ground" - un-identified sage. We are heading up to Spences Bridge for a few days to visit the family while the front passes through. We have a new Hang Glider coming in on trade on June 1, a Wills Wing Falcon 3 195 with very few hours for sale. $2250 CDN and it is featured here on this video. 5/15/14

| Agassiz BC A mix of sun and cloud. High 28. UV index 7 or high. Oddly neither Heritage Park or Cherry Hill were getting wind on-slope? We then headed to Nelson Park and got a few good flights in there before heading back to the Ranch.
We headed back to the Ranch and did some nice reverse kiting for a few hours and it never turned to inflow; so off to Bridal with Tom Chromy, Miquel, Dale and student Sean. We planned to do a tandem there but conditions were not tandem-able in my mind . . . but the solo guys got off before it turned to catabatic and had brilliant 10 minute sledders.
Pemberton Report - Luke says it was "rockin' in Pemby" as he was throwing down some acro! Williams Lake Report - Bill G was having fun over Williams Lake today at 2454 metres.

| Agassiz BC Mainly sunny. High 26. UV index 7 or high. We got back and sorted out gear and got on the road by 11 am, and came up to a cluttered launch with little room to lay out, but we managed to get Etienne & Paul launched from the back North Corner of launch while waiting for the other school to get the perfect cycle. Ali & I did a tandem, getting her "back on the horse" after a 6 month hiatus and winter. Perfect launch & landing conditions for her to fly the entire flight. We repeated the cycle 4 times in total. Paul was the Sky Pig today on the Element II M, staying up for 30 minutes in crappy light thermals as the day got more and more inverted.
Reports from Dale flying Bridal said that Robin broke through the inversion and got to 1800 metres, but mostly the flying was around 1300 metres over there and ninety minutes of airtime. 5/13/14
|
| Agassiz BC Cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers early this morning. Clearing this morning. High 24. UV index 7 or high.
We flew until 8:30 pm and even the last flight was still soarable.
Denis did 2 tandems & I did 3 tandems with thanks to Bev for driving part of the day. 5/12/14

| Agassiz BC A mix of sun and cloud. High 23. UV index 6 or high. It was not a total waste of time as the boys watched the latest Ozone video on precision Paragliding and how to react to problems. We were up on launch around 1130 am, and Donovan flew off towards the Best LZ for his first different landing field. Nice approach and landing and it was already thermic over there despite the long grass. Third day student Bill M flew off on the Element II M and had a nice flight into the Eagle Ranch LZ and figured out the wind was slight south and adjusted his final nicely and landed on his feet for the first time which made him very happy! We continued for another round of flights and it was getting strong enough to stay up for 20 minutes as Hammer & Martin N flew off behind the students. When we came up for Round 3, Hammer & Martin N were heading out to the Ranch complaining of rough air (-7 m/s up according to Martin - which got a laugh from Robin & Gary P). We waited a bit on launch and then I sent off Donovan on his new Buzz Z4 (30 flights under his belt and a stable wing should handle anything), and he was off and soaring in smooth air. after a few minutes I sent off Bill M too and he climbed like a pro using his Samsung S4 as a vario. It was getting windier in the Ranch LZ so Colleen was therre to receive Bill M, Donovan did well on his own.
Bill did exactly that approach with Colleen's expert guidance and he landed softly and smoothly near the circle. High Fives to Colleen from Hammer & Robin! We went up for one last flight around 5 pm, and both Donovan & Bill were soaring nicely so I left them and drove down to the LZ to guide them in. Very nice conditions then too. There was just a period of weird air mixing that caught Hammer & Martin by surprise mid-day, I guess. Meanwhile over at Bridal, Derek & Klaus & Monica were flying after 5 pm and they reported through 1600 metres within minutes and they flew to Elk and beyond to Mt Thom, and then back to Cheam where they reported in at 2000 metres. Nice day all around! Four student flights and many more pro pilots getting some nice airtime. 5/11/14
|
| Agassiz BC Mainly cloudy. Clearing this morning. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High 20. UV index 6 or high. We had some new students out, Duncan (who has 23 flights after learning in Peru) & Mike (who did a few days in Maui this winter) and they were treated to some nice thermals until it got too strong around 3 pm. Meanwhile Denis, Derek, Colleen & I did 9 tandems and they were all soarable flights lasting up to an hour. My second tandem with Brian had some very strong climbs with NE winds aloft? The last tandems required ballasting and when I was set to go it got very strong on launch yet the lulls were not launchable as the air was leeside then.
Kevin was at Harvest after doing the Raymont Triangle along with Martin N who flew to Deroche, then back to Woodside to do the Raymont Triangle (6 hours airtime on our loaner Nova Factor). Some big flights in the Valley and in Pemby! Alex R on his new Ozone Alpina2 outflew Martin H on his ATOS Rigid. Time to get back on the bag, Martin! May 11, 2014 tracklogs in Canada. 5/10/14
|
| Agassiz BC Cloudy. 60 percent chance of showers this morning and early this afternoon. High 13. UV index 4 or moderate. We cancelled the noon group of tandems because of this and we still ended up running late due to IFR conditions.
We had candlelight cocktails to the sound of a generator keeping the water pump running and charging our laptops. 5/9/14
|
| Agassiz BC Rain ending late this morning then cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers. High 14. Out here in the Valley it was blowing +35 kph at least from the SW and only a few rain showers. Possibly good HG or speed wing conditions later in the day. After Saturday afternoon it looks like a good seven days of good soaring weather in the Valley! Sasquatch Warning: An un-named pilot who does not drink says he was at the Sasquatch after flying yesterday and left after an hour at dinner with some other pilots and when heading east on Hwy 7 was followed by an un-marked Suburban patrol car and pulled over for a Drinking/Driving check. They appear to be stalking the Sasquatch from one of the sideroads so beware. 5/8/14
|
| Agassiz BC Cloudy. Rain beginning this afternoon. High 15. We are down to one Nissan Atlas 4x4 rig and one road car (Miata) so ICBC will probably have to raise their rates without all my Insurance Policies. The Instructor/Tandem Course went very well with rainy weather to accommodate the ground school sessions, but perfect weather fo the last three days for tandem practice flights and student training. Twelve attendees and everyone got their required 5 supervised tandem flights and some/most got their apprenticeship hours completed too. 5/7/14
|
| Agassiz BC Clearing. High 20. UV index 6 or high. All the tandem candidates got at least 2 tandem flights in super nice thermally conditions and were able to assist in landing new students Bill M & Etienne W.
Back down to retrieve the students and tandems and we were back up at 1 pm, and the students got another flight, and Etienne (commercial pilot) got above launch and was thermalling to the north with nice smooth control. Bill launched about 30 minutes later and was thermalling out by the Construction Site but there were sinky areas so we had to do the highway run to the Ranch but they both made it into the field for nice soft landings. While we were doing our Instructional Thing, the local hot dogs were climbing up & away trying to complete the Raymont Challenge. Some almost got back to Woodside but Harvest and surrounding fields looked busy in the end. Guy got to fly solo today and managed 5 hours floating around Woodside and eastern hills. May 7, 2014 tracklogs from Woodside. It got too windy for students so we got to watch the tandems do another round and Oni flying solo managed his first top-landing at Woodside this afternoon. Broc got to go tandem twice with Luke on the Ozone Magnum 38 after a year long hiatus, and he was even dressed!

| Agassiz BC Partly to mostly cloudy. High 17C. Winds SSW at 10 to 15 kph. We are running the Tandem Instructor Course now and it is giving the guys an opportunity to fly in mixed conditions with many other pilot weights. We have a Magnum II 38, Magnum II 41 (2) and Oni has his Takoo Tandem (40), so tandem pilots can try different kit too. The first run up I took new student Bill M for a flight and we soared with ease, and he got to fly his first approach. It was already getting windy before noon.
We went up for our 3:00 pm tandems and the group of Instructors came up to help out, but we had to call Cam, the local tree climber to rescue the wing due to the precarious nature the wing was draped over many trees. Denis and I launched in pretty strong conditions with the plan to fly to Harvest, launching after Hammer. Hammer was to the north but not getting very high. Denis did better just behind launch and I surfed out front for 40 minutes before flying my frozen passenger to Harvest Market where it was really windy too, making for a soft landing. I dropped my phone somewhere in the LZ so I may be hard to reach for a few hours today! Idiot!
We packed up and Bev & Lee came and retrieved us to head back and do tandem set #2. It was clearly too strong for solos or tandem training, but Denis & I managed to get the last set done. Denis got a great launch cycle and he was off but I had to wait 15 minutes to get anything decent as it was gusty & north at launch. Thanks to Al for the Ballasting.

| Agassiz BC Periods of rain ending near noon then cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers. High 14. UV index 3 or moderate. We arrived there around 11 am and drove up Sugarloaf Mountain and as we came upon the spring-fed mudhole partway up we stoped to check how deep and how solid before crossing. Apparently our testing was inadequate as I high centred the Suzuki quite deep in the mud.
Thanks to Lee's help we got out and later we found an alternate route around the mud further east.

We then moved on to Glider Certifications Seminar run by Stefan as he has a keen interest in a recent DHV article suggesting EN tests are not correctly done. After dark, we moved upstairs and did some glider maintenance training including line stretching and porosity testing.

Karen & Oni stayed high but the rain was coming in so I had them fly to Harvest Market to avoid getting wet. 5/3/14

| Agassiz BC sunny and getting windy in the afternoon. High 27C. We started doing the Indoor Presentations at 9:30 am and we had a great turnout with 12 new Instructor Candidates. We only had one student to work with as some other students bailed after looking at the weather, so Etienne had lots of feedback from his 3 Instructors on the Training Hill.
The Instructor/Tandem candidates also got some practice being clipped in both in the Simulators & on the Training Hill. Then after 1:00 pm, we headed up the mountain to do some tandem flying with Etienne going tandem with me to test the air. After a false start where the wing came up weirdly in a gust, we were off and soaring and Etienne got about 40 minutes of practice controlling the wing before we headed out to land at the Ranch. Luke & Brad were flying on Brad's Magnum II and somehow passed us and landed nicely just before us. It was bubbly coming in as the winds were pretty strong on the Ground. There is some new plowing in the field as we are planting corn on the west property lines, all in aid of sommthing out the humps & bumps. We are going to relocate the landing circles, both the BigCircle & the ProCircle as we are losing about 1/3 of the west LZ. It is not a problem now as the corn is not planted yet but it will get planted in mid-May and we will have to redo our landing approach diagrams for students.
We tried going to Bridal around 5 pm but reports from Derek after landing convinced us it was not worth it as it was quite choppy in the air and Klaus & Monica ended up driving down as it was so cross at launch. Martin N & Kevin A were coming back from Elk and they had pretty good ground speed heading east. Back at the Ranch we did some more Ground School Sessions annd around 7:30 pm, it calmed down enough to get another set of flights in with Karen taking Oni tandem this time, while Colleen flew out on her new Delta 2 to test the air for Etienne.
By the time we all got back to the Ranch it was 9:30 pm, a long day with out lunch so off to the Sasquatch for dinner & drinks to celebrate day One. 5/1/14
