Woodside Report - what a great day at Woodside! It started out with low cloudbase and strong cycles at launch, so I took a new student tandem and we had a one hour flight climbing 500 feet above launch and soaring all over the mountain. Gerry L flew with us and had his first soaring flight! From that flight it just got better. The 3 new students we had + Daisy tested the new training hill and developed some great launch skills before heading up the mountain to fly. Kelly, Brent L, and I had a nice thermalling flight around 1:00 pm, before the students could fly. Then we got all the new students in the air. Most got 3 flights, and launch and landing conditions were excellent with some mild thermals for them to get extended flights. May 30

Woodside Report - a group of HGers flew Woodside in "the strongest lift they have ever experienced at Woodside", all of the PGers styed on the ground as it was very windy. | Grouse Report - Went up to Grouse as the Valley was looking skunky. No truck yet up to launch so hiked up. Cross cycles from the West but East wind on the lake so I figured could be interesting layers on the way down. Nice lift over the cliffs then went over to the Cut to fly the bailout cliffs, nice but a bit punchy in places. After about 45 minutes headed over the city in very buoyant air, nice conditions in the LZ and got down just in time to avoid having to land in the lower LZ as a little league game was just getting started - Nicole May 29

Bridal Report - Mark F, Derek, Igor, Jeremy, Trevor, Mark's buddies from Golden
and I were out at Bridal at 4:45pm. We flew around for 1 to 1.5 hours
in light lift. My maxs were 1205 m and 2.2 m/s. Me and Mark went to
Gloria and I then continued to Elk and back. Got my best height at Elk
and managed to glide back from Elk (7.5 km) without a single turn, to
get back to launch high enough to top-land. After top-landing and
talking with Jeremy for a couple minutes, relaunched and spiraled down
to the LZ, since it was shutting down anyway. The entire time there was
very little sun so our gliders didn't get any unnecessary UV exposure - Rob S | May 25

It rained intermittently until 6:00 pm, and Kelly and Mark F bagged a sledder when the sun came out. Colleen and I couldn't get motivated to head to launch after flying all week at the Nationals, so we worked on the new training hill and swoop pond instead. Come and check it out next weekend - Jim

PG Nats Report - the last round was a valid task day with a 47 km task to Cherryville, but the conditions were not appropriate for that long a task. The day was undervalued by many bomb-outs and a few DNFs due to the short launch window. In the end Alex Raymont came in first overall with Graeme Herring in second place, Will Gadd in third place, and Nicole getting top woman and fourth overall! | Lars flew with us at Cooper's later in the day and had a good hour+ flight skying out some locals, Robin had a great flight for almost 2 hours. I flew the last flight after Lars and top-landed to drive Lars' truck down. Lots of top-landings in super soarable conditions right 'til 6:00 pm. May 23

PG Nats Report - a task was called for a 47 km triangle, and it proved a bit daunting for some. The early starters could barely maintain and after 5-6 hit the bomb-out field Mark asked the field if they agreed to a second task, provided no one who launched got past 4 kms (the bomb-out distance). Everyone launched and the impatient ones were on the ground while the late launchers found enough to keep them in the air. Nicole led the late launchers down to Lumby Ridge and from there they made the forst three turnpoints before heading east to Mt Cherry. Most were on the ground below Rawlings Cliff, but at least 4-5 made it past Saddle Mtn. I believe Alex Raymont is still #1. WCSC pilots (at least Graham, Nicole and Alex) are doing very well in this competition flying consistent rounds.

PG Nats Report - a good day overall. Colleen got us all going by climbing out immediately inspiring the hot shots. Most pilots made it out of the bombout zone starting from Vernon Mtn. to Lumby Ridge, then over to Coopers Launch, back to Lumby Ridge then into Randy's LZ. Unfortunately only Will Gadd made goal in 1:36. The rest of us dropped out along the way. Only provisional results are up at this point. No mayhem.
| Fraser Valley Report - rain most of the day, and the excavating is complete. Thanks to Kelly for seeding the bare ground so it will be ready in a few weeks! PG Nationals Report - Task was called for Vernon Mtn. to Saddle Mtn. to Randy's. Cloudy skies with not much hope of thermals as many pilots launched and sidehill landed to hike back for another flight (as allowed in comp rules as long as you are within the start window). | Tom McCune from Seattle WA, Graham H. and Colleen went for it and some got the Saddle turnpoint, Colleen didn't but still placed 4th. Alex Raymont is in first place on Day 3, after two tasks. Fraser Valley Report - rain most of the day, but it didn't stop the excavator creating the new Eagle Ranch training hill and Swoop Pond. It looked fabulous last night after only one day of work. And the pond is filling up naturally, due to the high water table this spring. May 19

Lumby Mayhem Report - The first task day of the comps started early with a 10:00 am pilots meeting on Cooper's. As the meeting ended, two free-flyer PGers had a mid-air, tangling up with only one getting her reserve out before they fell into the trees below launch. All ended well with a few scrapes and a torn glider. | Then the comp window opened and the race was on: Coopers to Lumby Ridge, back to Coopers before heading to Cherryville for 35.8 kms. Norm was free flying and figured out the task from the competitors tracks and flew most of the course. Mid flight CJ from WA state had to throw her reserve, and she landed in a logging slash uninjured with Thayer H from Seattle landing beside her to check if she was okay. I got low on Lumby Ridge, but made it out of there to just get back to the Cooper Start turnpoint before the shade hit. I was most amazed by Jim Orava's low save on the Saddle, way below me on the other side of Lumby and he made it pretty close to goal. Local pilots Nicole and Alex both made goal, with Alex having a wild ride right down to landing on Hwy 6 with Mark D stopping traffic in a gust front! May 18

Woodside Report - a lot of airtime at Woodside starting around 9:30 am, Colleen was soaring early and had to land to guide in Byron for his first flight after three tandems. Byron managed to circle in some nice smooth lift on his first solo flight.
After that HGs and PGs alike were getting 1-2 hour flights until about 3:30 pm, when it started getting strong at launch and landing.
It was definitely Kevin A's day. First he flew for about an hour before heading over the back towards Harrison Beach. Then he headed to Bridal with a group and flew there getting trashed in the landing with a 30% collapse before softly touching down, then he headed back to Woodside where he flew straight out clinbing to 1500 meters before flying into Chilliwack on an upwind glide! I guess he likes his new Vulcan!

Woodside Report - Thomm and Andy flew around 1:00 pm and both soared for a while, the air was a bit choppy and disorganized. Norm showed up for a short flight before work, so Bev drove us up so I could take Byron for a tandem. Norm launched after Martin and Mia on HGs, and everyone went up fast. It was gusty on launch >30 km at times, so we launched in a lull and climbed out pretty fast for "a couple of chunky monkeys" on the tandem. After about an hour of getting punched around neaar cloudbase, it was too rough to let Byron try the controls so we flew out over the flats going up all the way to the Ranch. We found some sink over the river and landed in gusty conditions. Norm followed us in, making up excuse #39 for being late.
| Bridal Report - I heard Allan D launch and report condition reports continuously as the "usual gang" arrived at the LZ and Launch. As we drove towards Bridal at 4:00 pm, there was thunder in the clouds near Woodside. As we approached the Agassiz Bridge the wind was gusting east at 25 km+, but on the south side it was west at 25 km+. Perhaps we should warn Allan, but we were having trouble contacting cause there was too much traffic. As we arrived at the GOlf Course, Allan was on the ground packed up so he missed the action but did log 50 minutes in smooth lift everywhere he flew (he landed because he instinctively knew something was happening because the sky turned black). We headed back to Eagle Ranch and the clouds released buckets of rain and hail (as forecast). No one flew after Allan at Bridal. May 8

| Bridal Report - Colleen and I headed over to Bridal after 5:00, and watched gliders going up everywhere. Based on the radio communications at least 10 pilots in the air; some heading to Elk, Gloria, some east to Cheam. We launched at about 5:30 pm and it took a few minutes to work out of the bowl but once established in climbs we were over the Saddle quickly. The air was pretty smooth for the strength of thermals. I joined Kevin A and Allan west of Upper Launch for a while and a strange cloud phenomonon was occurring - multiple cloudbases. I was climbing way above Upper Launch and encountered cloudbase so I headed east and caught another thermal that Allan was in that went almost 300 meters higher before hitting that base. Ian J, Robin, Alex, Nikolai and I top-landed to drive the fleet of cars down. Alex relaunched because Klaus hiked up to drive Brad's truck down (Brad arrived late and went stright up to Cheam without turning - it just kept thermalling past 8:00 pm). Nicole landed somewhere east near Laidlaw, everyone else did "out-and-returns" on their flights. Flight times varied from 2 hours for late launchers, to four hours for early flyers! May 7

| Bridal Report #2 -Got to Bridal to east winds so we waited until it turned inflow before going up. Lucille from Edmonton was visiting and arrived with Colleen. The lift got good later on and a fair bit of west wind up high; Alan and I headed to Elk and I ridge-soared the SW face of that mountain for a bit then decided to head back as it was getting cold. Nice lift around the knob and the bowl then a sinky cycle came through and flushed some pilots; some pilots top-landed to wait it out. The lift got nice again after about 15 minutes and we got back above launch and back up to Saddle height. End of the day Rob S. and I top-landed to drive the trucks down - Nicole
| Pemberton Report - Hey Jim, just back from Pemberton and had a great day on Friday. East conditions in the morning made for some short flights then Jim Orava and I headed over to the east launch above Mt Currie and flew for about half an hour before landing at Mario’s for some burgers. The evening went off with crazy lift everywhere. Jim, Corine, Alister, Mel, Mike Miller, the Russians and I all got high – Jim almost reached 10000 feet. April 2003 Site of the Day archives rain for 28 of 30 April days, but we managed to get a few flights in between showers. Even the golfers were complaining!
March 2003 Site of the Day archives some high spring flights in early March, but not a great weather month. Still no HPAC Insurance!
February 2003 Site of the Day archives some nice long spring flights in late February. HPAC Insurance expired on Feb 14, so many pilots stayed home instead of getting USHGA coverage.
