Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Partly Cloudy. High near 55F. Winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. 1100 metres We had a great morning ground school lesson indoors for Andrew, Patrick and Ryan and we got harnesses adjusted in the simulators and waited for the winds to drop to manageable levels. Scotty was out in the LZ kiting his 12 meter Ozone Fazer 2 and that was still a handful as the wind was strong & gusty. Once the winds abated, we headed out for some kiting starting on XS wings first and then graduating to regular sized gear and everyone did well. It was Day One for Andrew and Patrick, and Day Two for Ryan and they were all kiting like pros within a few hours. Then I pulled out the Tow Rig and we were towing to the NW in the field in very nice winds. Patrick & Ryan did 6 tows each, while Andrew was more cautious and only got 3 tows but they were all good tows. Jacek tried a tow just before I put away the rig and the winds were a bit cross and he got off track a bit but he saved it in the end so I could keep the tension up. Another successful day proved the value of towing for new students. A few pilots were up on the launch at Woodside but it was not flyable due to outflow winds til after 6 pm and we only saw one pilot fly off, meanwhile we had 15 student flights. It is also saving a lot of gas by not having to drive up the mountain! Sea to Sky Report - this week two very experienced bush pilots, James & John recreated John's flight to Squamish. They launched off Cypress ski area and flew north past Brunswick Beach, on to Brittania Mines and then on to Squamish. They are both flying Ozone gliders, James on a Swift 4 and John on an Alpina 2. Nice flying guys! This is James' tracklog. 3-30-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Cloudy. High 46F. Winds SW at 15 to 20 mph. 600 metres Around 1 pm we saw some HGers in the air at Woodside and they looked parked coming out. Later we were kiting in the LZ and hoping to get Scotty up on a paramotor but it started to rain. This seems like a slow start to the season? 3-29-18

High 7. 600 metres If anyone is looking for a light travel trailer, we are selling our Trail Cruiser 21 this spring. Trail Cruiser Trail-Lite for sale $10,000 CDN. We now have a camper that goes 200 mph and it has wings! 3-26-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Partly Cloudy. High near 45F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph 1800 metres Ryan took to kiting the EONA L quite quickly and we had perfect East wind from 15-20 kph with no directional switching. He was kiting using the As-Cs method perfectly within 30 minutes. I had to go in to get some gear for another pilot and I left Ryan to his own and when I returned he was running the length of the LZ and kiting the wing back to restart. I got the tow rig setup for this direction of wind and just as we clipped him in the rain started, and heavy. And the wind switched to South and gusty. While all this was going on Pedro & Brian were flying their Hanggliders off Woodside and they got 20 minutes of soaring before the rains hit. Others were down at Blanchard WA and having great flights of 2-3 hours, a great place to fly in spring when cloudbase is low elsewhere. Some others were flying the not-so-secret Dewdney Bench and got some nice airtime too, but I did not hear if it rained there. After a few hours the sun came out at Woodside but it was too strong for towing and the group that went up in Bev's truck drove back down as it was blowing pretty strong on top. It was a great day for Ryan as he is super confident with his ground handling and next step will be towing this week to prepare him for high flights, as his goal is to hike & fly the local montains when he gets certified. Note the new snowline at Mt. Cheam, which came yesterday and today after the front rolled through. More hiking at Bridal I suspect but Woodside is driveable almost to the launch. 3-24-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Mostly rainy. High 7C. Winds light and variable. 1400 metres We had breakfast at mom's house and she drove me to the airport but a big cell came over the Rockies from Cranbrook and cloudbase dropped to less than 1000 feet. I called Flight Service and the specialist said that it was going to get worse instead of better and to "get out of High River fast before it becomes IFR". I did my prefight and run up and was off at 9:30 am and could only climb to 4500 feet and had to divert 50 miles north to Airdrie to maintain VFR and the Controllers would not let me fly over the Calgary Aiport at that altitude. Once over Airdrie I could see the Rockies and they were in sunshine with a few clouds above 15,000 feet. I flew straight at the Rockies and from the 4500 feet to 12500 feet I was getting 150 knots and a great climb rate as the turbos kick in at higher altitudes. I crossed the Banff area to the north and was levelling out at 12500 feet for the duration of the flight. This Skymaster has oxygen tanks but they were not filled and there are no masks onboard so it was just like flying a paraglider. Somewhere near Golden my iPad lost GPS reception and there is not VOR or ADF reception for a bit but I had a good course line and came out over Golden where I planned and it was clear there as forecasted. Clear sailing all the way to Salmon Arm which looked cold but in the clear still. From Salmon Arm to Kamloops doesn't take long when you are going 170 knots and I was soon overhead Kamloops, before heading along the Coquihalla towards Merritt. Merritt was also in the clear but soon after that I was having to descend to maintain VFR. I did some cloud hopping and flew through some little puffs but I was soon having to descend from 12500 feet to 6500 feet and had to start flying down the Fraser Canyon as I was not sure how the Coquihalla Summit would be for visibility as it often fogs in there when driving, I was soon down to 4500 feet near Boston Bar but still going 160 knots and I quickly over Hope Airport after soaring Dog Mountain close in to check out the snowline. As I crossed near Green Hill it started to rain and then it started to snow! WTF! It was hard to see the Chilliwack Airport in the distance but I followed Hwy 1 and was soon on final slowing down to 120 knots to drop the gear and flaps. The landing was soft and smooth and I taxied in to the gas pumps but decided I was too cold to fuel up now and Colleen came out and we taxied to an empty tiedown spot for the evening. Total elapsed flight time from High River was 2:30 despite the diversion north. Maybe could be done in 2:00 with a straight line flight plan. When I looked to the east after tie down, it looked like the ceiling had dropped lower and we could see snow down to 300 metres on Elk. The entire ferry flight from Live Oak FL to Chilliwack (3500 miles) took four days and could have been done faster if I flew longer hours and into the night but I was getting acquainted with the aircraft and had a few minor snags to deal with along the way so I took it easy. I think one could do this trip in two days comfortably, starting earlier and planning longer legs with less fuel stops. 3-23-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Mostly rainy. High 7C. Winds light and variable. 1400 metres The line guy filled the plane with some of the last cheap 100LL as I would be in Canada today. I took off at 8:30 am and headed straight over Billings MT and headed straight to Lethbridge AB to clear customs. The vastness of the Western US is apparent as you fly over it. Flight time was 3.5 hours and I arrived exactly when my Foreflight App had calculated my ETA from the upper level winds. Lethbridge as usual was gusty from the West at 25 knots so my approach was a long final and a short landing distance. Customs here is a phone call to someone in Ontario and they clear you over the phone as they have all your info two hours ahead of your arrival. I had the FBO fill up the plane while I warmed up in the office. The Skymaster has a gas heater but it barely keeps up with -10C at altitude and was dressed for Florida/Texas temps. Oddly I could not find any warm weather gear at my stops in Texas. The flight service specialist I called for a weather briefing from Lethbridge to Chilliwack advised that VFR was not possible today as a Pacific Low was pummelling the west coast and dropping heavy snows in southern BC. So I flight planned to High River (30 minutes) with a plan to visit the family in Calgary while waiting for the weather to clear a bit. We used to keep a Cessna 182 here and flew out of here for many years so it was good to be back! 3-22-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Mostly rainy. High 7C. Winds light and variable. 1400 metres I departed DeQuincey LA at 9 am and stopped for fuel in Plainview Texas where the airport winds were quite gusty but the Skymaster is a good crosswind performer. After resting for an hour and re-doing my flight plan which originally was taking me to Salt Lake City which now had rain/snow showers and low visibility, so I replotted a course to Billings MT. When I got to Gillette WY about an hour from Billings, I decided to stop for the night as it was quite windy and wanted to land in daylight. Gillette has a nice runway and it was right into wind with winds 180 degrees at 18 gusting to 28 knots! Again the Skymaster is a solid heavy bird and takes gusty winds well. I taxied into the FBO and tied down for the night. The FBO offered me a free shuttle truck for my use for the evening. They apologized for it being an old truck? My tracklog for today is pretty straight and I flew through 6 states today with lots of help from different ATC Controller doing flight following for traffic advisories theough the Military Operation Areas (MOA). 3-21-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Mostly rainy. High 7C. Winds light and variable. 1400 metres I fueled up the new Cessna 337 and took off towards the west and after I selected "gear up" the gear cycled but I did not get the yellow light and the handle did not return to neutral? This happened once on the test flight last week but we thought it was due to not being used much since Christmas. I kept going towards Louisiana and landed a Crestview Airport for fuel and had to hand-pump the gear down, and after taxiing in I noticed the doors were still not closed. The local mechanics were not that famiiar with this model so I had to point out the hydraulic fill point and how to check it and after a few hours I was back in the air with good landing gear. I had to wait for a few military planes doing circuits here at Crestview, a big military service hub for the airforce. I continued west and landed at 5:30 pm in DeQuincey LA to fuel up and decided to stay for the night. Nice airport with some ancient buildings, some destroyed by a tornado last Christmas. Cheap gas compared to Canada! 3-20-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Mostly Cloudy. High 11C. Winds light and variable. 1700 metres Jackson got his first two motoring flights today, one on the Blackhawk and another on the Kangook/Sky 100 unit before the winds got too strong. Martin from Squamish also got his first launch on our 100 cc trainer, but the carb was gumming up so I had to do a rebuild to get it at peak horsepower. Yes, we are fully certified now by Transport Canada! Yeay, but they fouled up my permit again so back to the Abby Office when I get back from FL. 3-17-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Mostly Sunny. High 11C. Winds light and variable. 1700 metres Bev & Dennie flew to Harvest Market, others flew to Dewdney and back. It got windy and thermic at the Ranch around 5 pm and we had some exciting approaches into the LZ! Pic by Rod F. Some folks were trying a new launch at Dewdney, where there was a new clearcut created last summer. It is not a high launch but the road access is good and apparently it worked for Gary P. 3-16-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Sunny. High 14C. Winds NNE at 10 to 15 km/h. 1100 metres At the Harrison Bridge it was definitely outflow with whitecaps. New PPG student Jackson arrived at 10 am for ground school and some kiting and his new SupAir EONA was put to the paces today. Jackson got the wing last November and has been kiting and practice flying at Diefenbaker Park and he looked good from the first kiting session today, with no bad habits and good wing control so we hooked him up to the Winch. We had 10 perfect tows and he was doing reverse launches with good control, and had very nice landings. Yes, 10 flights in a day and we quit at 4 pm. This is increased productivity and increased skills for new students. We did get some video footage today testing the new Independence Paragliding Chase Cam on Jaskson's wing and it turned out quite well first try. 3-10-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Mainly Sunny. High 11. 1100 metres It was then Chris L's turn to do some warm up tows before clipping into the Blackhawk 125 Paramotor. Chris did 3 tows as well and has a great mastery of the AirDesign EAZY glider after just a few days. Chris did 2 paramotor flights and we had to stop when it got too windy from the NW, it was smooth in the air but just no penetration for doing circuits. We are very pleased with the winch after 20 test tows and it is going to help new students progress quite quickly for free flight and especially paramotoring. Horsefly Report - I skied up to Horsefly today. The logging road is plowed up to about 3km right down to gravel, but is waist deep snow until 800m, then ice-rink breakable crust above 850m. I decided to B-line for launch and skinned straight up through the trees - a little faster that way. Launch is currently a luge track with all the melt freeze cycles, and only safely launchable on skis right; foot launch on that steep slope would be committing until it warms up and the snow could be packed down. I sawed away some slash and branches to clear a little ski launch. Light outflow in the valley gave perfect launch conditions. It was a mellow flight over Elbow Lake back down to the golf course. A beautiful evening. Thanks for suggesting that site - Brian B 3-9-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Mostly Cloudy. High around 10C. Winds NNE at 10 to 15 km/h. 1100 metres But the winds were fickle! We started out with South winds, which then became East winds and then strong NW winds . . . all in the matter of a few minutes so we just kited rather than setting up the winch. Chris is doing extremely well with the reverse kiting and he is completely self-sufficient on his second day of kiting! When the winds stabilized I took the Blackhawk 125Lite motor out for a spin using Chris' AirDesign EAZY M, what a nice wing for motoring. So easy to bring up! And stable in the air. I did one quick circuit over the Ranch and the air was extemely mixed up! I took off to the east and did a right turn over the training hill hitting NW winds at tree top height and it was turbulent to the west. Quite thermic so it was good that we were not towing! Back to kiting for a few hours. When we started getting solid NW winds I pulled out the motor again this time test flying a Blackhawk Edge 30 wing. Of course once I clipped in the winds went light for some time and I had to try many times to get a solid wing, but I got off and did a few circuits bteaking in the new motor. And the switched 180 degrees in the field requiring me to land to the east? A very mixed up day! But we flew! 3-6-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: AM Clouds/PM Sun. High 7C. Winds light and variable. 1100 metres Chris was out for his first high flights on the tow rig after only having a training hill session last October before the rains hit us. We started out kiting into the NW winds and then it switched around 1 pm to straight South winds. This of course after I set up the tow system to tow into the NW wind. Once Chris looked good with his forward launches, I sent him to the east side of Eagle Ranch to kite while I moved the winch. Our first tow went well but Chris misunderstood my command to keep left of the tow line and he released prematurely, but it was a good low run. After that the tows got better and better to the point that we were getting him over 100 metres off the ground. We had the weaklink break once and a few of the turnaround pulleys failed and were replaced but we got 10 tows done by 5 pm. The Phoenix Winch LLC winch project is a success with little tweaking. I added a total of 1200 feet of line on the spool and added the paramotor throttle so I am away from the engine noise. Woodside Report - Derek and a group of 10 pilots headed up Woodside after 1 pm. Al made it to 4 kms and got stuck and had to winch out, Derek turned around at 2.5 km and hiked from there with a group. Conditions were lee and some pilots had dicey launches but no one was hurt. Once in the air it was idiot-lift everywhere away from the mountain. Martin N is back from his Oz/NZ expedition and had a great flight landing at Prest Road & Highway 1 where Ev picked him up. Derek and others bagged 2+ hours and some topped out at 1800 metres. Denis snapped this shot at cloudbase. Folks came into the Ranch while we were towing but there was no conflict and most were pretty cold and glad to be on warm terrafirma. Kevin's Ozone Alpina 3 Report - Kevin was in Raglan NZ, where Robbie Whittal lives and develops Ozone Kites & Speedwings. He snagged a new Ozone Alpina 3 for a test flight in strong conditions. I had the opportunity to fly the new Ozone Alpina3 (ML) in Raglan, NZ, thanks to Matt Taggart of Ozone on March 6th. We flew their nice local coastal site and upon arrival noticed the wind picking up so we got prepped quickly. By the time I launched, the wind speed was hitting 20-25 km/hr, so I picked a ?lull? and pulled the glider up. The wind was strong but the glider responded well to my movements and I was airborne in a few smooth seconds. The air was surprisingly bumpy for a coastal site and this was because it was extremely unstable with cu?s popping in front. I experienced some nice little 3.3 m\s bullet thermals that got me 100 m over launch at times. I was right at home on the wing immediately and can only really say that it felt like an A2, but due to the strength of the wind, it was difficult to discern any significant difference, except for one dramatic change: I needed to use big ears to lose altitude and unlike the A2, which would start fighting the big ears after about five seconds, the A3 didn?t mind the ears at all and still popped out after a couple of quick pumps. I boated around with Matt who was flying a D2 and top landed after about fifteen minutes. I saw him land and then work hard to bring the glider down and out of the wind. I could sense the wind speed getting stronger, so I began working on the ?process? of landing. In the meantime, Rob Whittal launched what I think was an Ozone Rapido and was playing around in the strong wind considerable lower than the A3 (which is real climber). It took me about fifteen minutes to get the A3 down. I tried flying out to the ocean but the lift was strong under the cu. I tried big ears and speed bar but as soon as I got near the take off, I was hoisted up. Eventually I was doing wing overs, with ears in sink in front of launch before finally getting into position to descend going backwards onto the nice big field. The glider came down but I couldn?t kill it, so I just ran for a while until I over took it and got round to the side and de-inflated it (probably about 20-30 meters of running!) Not the greatest conditions to test a new wing but happily, I felt very secure on the A3 which made it n immediate winner and the handling was absolutely reminiscent of the A2, which was always my favourite glider of all time - until today! Nice work, Team Ozone. - KVA 3-5-18

Windy this morning. High 6. 1000 metres They got stuck at 3.5 kms and hiked in knee deep snow to find strong East winds at launch. Meanwhile at the Ranch I finally got rid of the last of the deadfall and it was cold and windy the entire day. Brian came down afer the failed attempt at Woodside and kited til dark in the Eagle Ranch LZ, which is drying out nicely. 3-2-18

| Woodside Forecast Harrison Mills Forecast: Rain ending this afternoon then cloudy with 30 percent chance of showers. High plus 5. 1000 metres Derek was ready with chains and studded tires but we only got to 2.5 kms before we got stuck, so it will be a "hike & fly" this weekend. Brian was motivated and hiked up through knee deep snow from where we stopped and managed to get off launch despite deep snow there too. |
