July 1 Woodside for students, Bridal for Lemmings Cloudy with afternoon sunny periods. High 21°c. 100% POP 270° at 9 knots -3.0°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)

Marie Claude (M.C.) Dumont was named the FlyBC Rookie of the Year 2001 at the Eagle Ranch Grand Opening. She really earned the title and received a new Charlie Insider helmet for an award!

June 30 Woodside for students, Bridal for Comp Pilots and Lemmings Cloudy. High 17°c. 100% POP 280° at 12 knots -2.6°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Bridal Report - the task was set and validated with Paragliders flying Bridal and Hanggliders flying Woodside. Tough flying with many not getting to the first turnpoint. Search and Rescue called to extract a paraglider from the outhouse in the Golf Course LZ :-)

Woodside Report - Score was: Paragliders 0; Hanggliders 0; Trees 2

Hangglider bites the dust! or should I say trees - John O dropped a tip on launch and it turned him into the trees south of launch and he flew through them and destroyed the glider bit he emerged unscathed.

Then Lynn a visiting PG pilot, launched and drifted into the same trees and was hanging 25 feet in the air with no injuries. That glider took 3 hours to extract from the tree, leaving for the Club Cup Party at 9:30 pm.

It was a bit too strong at Woodside for students (25 kph) but Kevin A, and Richard (from the Interior) flew a nice 1+ hour flight getting 1500 feet over launch.
Woodside
rain in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon. High 19°c. 100% POP 180° at 10 knots -2.8°/1000'
(VERY unstable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - we had a new group of students spend the day ground handling and towing, and Jeremy and I flew off Woodside later - Jim

Stay at Work
Heavy rainfall warning in effect. High 19°c. 100% POP 180° at 30 knots -2.8°/1000'
(VERY unstable lapse rate)

June 27 Woodside/Lil Nick
Cloudy and cooler. High 23°c. 40% POP 240° at 13 knots -2.8°/1000'
(VERY unstable lapse rate)
Fraser Valley Report - the weather forecast was way off and it rained quite heavily all day near Chilliwack, cloudbase at Woodside was below launch - Jim

June 26 Woodside/Bridal/Grouse
Sunny and Warm. 0 percent chance of showers. High 31°c. 0% POP 240° at 12 knots -2.9°/1000'
(VERY unstable lapse rate)
Grouse Report - Nicole reported strong lift and rowdy conditions due to southerly winds. Thermals broken up badly but they still got up high. Nicole reported some acrobatics from pilots doing the old standard approach over the road and the new thermal trigger (terraced bank of the lake). Smooth conditions over the swimming pool approach to the east - Jim

Bridal Report - Norm squeaked out an hour in "hard to find" lift. "Even Ian J was working hard" - quoted Norm

June 25 Woodside/Bridal/Grouse
A mix of sun and cloud. 40 percent chance of showers. High 24°c. 40% POP 240° at 7 knots -2.3°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Grouse Report - I had to meet Grouse Management today so I took my wing in case it was flyable. It was overcast when I arrived for the meeting but it started to clear around 5:00 pm, nice cycles coming in for a reverse launch so I flew off.

I turned for a while to the west of launch getting above launch but I was too close to the trees for comfort so I headed out to the cliffs, not much there but a few turns. Lift all the way to the bottom of the Cut but not much (0.3 m/s up) so I could maintain close to the trees but just sinky out further. Landing area was no wind, no players on the field and no bumps on final.

The trees on final have been slated for removal as soon as we can get a work party together - Jim

June 24 Woodside
Cloudy. High 22°c. 0% POP light and variable (9900) -2.2°/1000'
(nearly stable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - Norm, Jeremy and I headed up to Woodside at 3:00 pm to a blue sky, only one CU to the north.

Launch conditions were moderately strong. I was test flying an Ozone Proton M and had a solid launch and got hoovered up pretty fast and had a great climb to 1300 meters above launch, but it was quite strong from the west drifting me back over the clearcut, and when I lost the thermal it was huge sink all the way back to launch height.

Jeremy launched in the same strong stuff (he just got signed off on Sunday) and was S-turning in front of launch just maintaining as I arrived over launch. Then he found the same thermal that took me up before and did a great job coring it to 1200 meters (must be the quality instruction he learned from FlyBC) and I followed him up to the same height.

Norm had still not launched as I headed over the back along the spine towards Agassiz Mountain. Smooth lift all the way to the prison, and 6 m/s UP at Agassiz Mtn. Very smooth, some sink in places but I maintained above the mountain just waiting for Norm as we had discussed landing at Harrison for ice cream earlier.

I saw Norm in the distance over Woodside (or I thought it was Norm) and he had great altitude so I mentioned my route and the smooth conditions and said he had lots of height to make it safely. Then I headed east towards Bear Mtn.

As I left Agassiz Peak I hit huge sink - 5.0 m/s DOWN and was in a bit of rotor from the west wind shadow behind the peak, as I crossed towards Bear I saw the wind lines on Harrison Lake and decided that it was better to try to land upwind of the venturi into Harrison Lake and was basically parked into the wind not climbing, just maintaining but I could not make Bear at this pace so I went on the speed bar to get to a smooth uncultivated field near the road as Bev was chasing me.

I had a smooth landing in this large field and got on the radio to see how Norm was doing but only heard Jeremy saying Norm didn't launch. Jeremy was obviously still in the air, good for him (about an hour had elapsed since I launched).

Then as I finished packing up I looked up and saw Jeremy overhead and I gave him directions to my field and he landed next to me! Good flight Jeremy, 31 high flights, 10 hours airtime and you made it to Harrison!

Watch for a yellow APCO Santana at a mountain near you, it will be above you (for sure)! - Jim

Bridal Report - when I dropped off Norm's and Jeremy's wings so they could fly Bridal I saw Ian J (tandem) and Allan D high above Loggers Leap. I found a broken shock mount on the "Bananna" so I couldn't drive up anyway, so I headed home - Jim

Bridal Report #2 - All went well with Jeremy flying, he had an excellent launch and landing. He landed in the swamp. Funny thing was he forgot his helmet in your vehicle and was crushed thinking he can't fly, so I not only loaned him my radio he also borrowed my hemet. He thought he should buy me dinner for that, I told him no I didn't mind helping him out. He enjoyed his flight immensely! Norm soared for awhile and really enjoyed himself also. As soon as my leg is in shape again I also will be flying, but watching is a great learning opportunity. :) - Bev

June 23 Woodside
Cloudy. High 23°c. 30% POP 240° at 7 knots -2.9°/1000'
(very unstable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - 5 students flew Woodside this morning and had two flights. Colleen showed Martin Henry where the thermals were, and I flew a nice flight getting to 1000 meters before heading out to land at Eagle Ranch (right where the telescope was set up, very smooth).

Bridal Report - bad call going to Bridal, some very entertaining launches cause it was very southerly. Good thermals but broken up by high winds all the way to the LZ. Only 5 pilots flew the last shift

June 22 Bridal
Sunny. High 28°c. 0% POP 280° at 5 knots -2.5°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - Perry, Caroline, Joseph and Jeremy flew Woodside this morning and had two very nice flights before it got strong. Then the winds picked up too high for students so we went to lunch. Then off to Bridal Upper Launch with 9 pilots and Bev driving.

Bridal Report - we drove the long way through Chilliwack to get to Upper Launch but the snow was too deep and we had to hike the last 1 km or so. But it was worth it! Good launch conditions to get all 8 pilots off and soaring. First Bridal flights for Perry and Caroline and they had nice landings in the Swamp LZ, Jeremy almost had a nice landing too.

June 21 Bridal, for the longest day of the Year
Sunny in the PM. High 28°c. 0% POP 280° at 5 knots -2.5°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Bridal Report - Colleen and I arrived at Bridal Lower Launch at 5:00 pm after hitching a ride with a local couple out 4x4ing, and several people were up high already.

I scratched around trying to get out of the bowl and watch Rob S fly west low on his new Octane and he found a thermal below Upper Launch and was climbing slowly so I followed him up. We arrived at Upper Launch 10 minutes later and continued soaring.

Norm, Ian J and Allan D were up high too. Norm got above Cheam Peak (7200 feet). Nice flying and no retrieve!

June 20 Woodside/Bridal
Sunny in the PM. High 20°c. 30% POP 280° at 5 knots -2.2°/1000'
(just above standard lapse rate)
Bridal Report - Bridal was on for many 2 hour flights, everyone was happy!

Grouse Report - Went up to Grouse with a bunch of First Flight pilots, and Ian Porter also joined us later on. Launched and scratched around the cliffs until I found a good thermal, and took it back to launch height. Eventually, Ian and I were at the CYA ceiling of 6000' and we flew around behind launch and towards Crown, with Ian going to the far side of Crown. We both landed after about 2 hours to warm up and watch the tandem flights. On the way back home saw some kiting going on at Vanier Park so stopped in for a bit of ground handling. There was JF and MC, Graeme, and Grant. We kited in nice W winds until dark! - Nicole

June 19 Woodside/Bridal
Showers this morning. Sunny in the PM. High 20°c. 30% POP 280° at 5 knots -2.2°/1000'
(just above standard lapse rate)
Woodside Report - Bev says the conditions were nice for two flights at Woodside.

June 18 Stay Home
Showers heavy at times this morning. Risk of a thundershower. Additional rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 millimetres. Locally windy. High 17°c. 60% POP 270° at 12knots -2.2°/1000'
(just above standard lapse rate)
No pireps

June 17 Whidbey Island
Cloudy, rain showers, High 17°c. 60% POP 160° at 20 knots -2.2°/1000'
(just above standard lapse rate)
Whidbey Report - looked soarable all afternoon, rain stopped around 11:00 am - Jim

June 16 Woodside/Bridal
Sunny, High 22°c. 20% POP 230° at 8 knots -2.5°/1000'
(unstable standard lapse rate)
Woodside Report - good training weather until 3:00 pm (students bagging 3-4 flights before then), and then the HGers went way high! Some soaring on PGs but it felt weird in the air according to the experts. No reports from Bridal - Jim

June 15 Woodside/Bridal
Sunny, High 26°c. 0% POP 240° at 8 knots -2.2°/1000'
(just above standard lapse rate)
Woodside Report - student flights started early with upper level winds above 10 knots shutting us down from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Norm bagged 2:18 on his flight in rough air, getting to 1100 meters. Bev flew too! I flew a tandem at the same time, and flew out after a half hour cause it was too much work . . . but the passenger liked it - Jim

Bridal Report - a few flew Bridal and Ian J got above the saddle on the way to Upper Launch but said he got hammered there a few times, suspect south winds converging with the thermals at that area.

Blackcomb Report - don't know what day but rumours of JF flying from Blackcomb to Meager Creek west of Pemberton, great flight and a long retrieve to get the car!

June 14 Woodside/Bridal
Sunny, High 26°c. 0% POP 240° at 7 knots -1.8°/1000'
(just below standard lapse rate)
Woodside Report - it got too windy for students by 3:00 pm, but I flew and had a bumpy not too lifty flight, got above launch but couldn't turn much because of the winds, didn't hear anyone at Bridal flying (Chilliwack was 13G23 knots at one point after I landed!) - Jim

June 13 Woodside/Bridal (Pemberton if you want to go high!)
Sunny, High 33°c. 0% POP 160° at 8 knots -2.3°/1000'
(just above standard lapse rate)
Bridal Report - flights to 8000 feet/2600 meters. No XCs but fun flying with student Jeremy skying out the locals for 1.5 hours - Jim

Bridal Gloat Report - Well another hot day (33C at Chilliwack airport)...luckily we all got high and were able to cool off! A bunch made it to upper launch and above; Glen T. top-landed into a snowbank behind launch, then re-launched and joined us at Gloria, where Rob S. continued to Elk and back (there was a pretty significant east wind up high). I then went east towards Archibald and got to 2400m, then crossed to Cheam and flew over the summit with about 100m to spare (it was very cool looking down at the peak!). Back at lower launch everyone was getting low to warm up and do some top-landings. Most pilots got between 2 and 4 hours! Another great day at Bridal! - Nicole

Pembie Report - sledders for Carl and Mark F - Jim

June 12 Woodside/Bridal
Sunny, High 25°c. 0% POP 260° at 6 knots -2.2°/1000'
(just above standard lapse rate)
Bridal Report - Got to Bridal where there was very light valley winds and met up with Alan, Rob S., and Ian J. Got to the top (it was HOT!) to light cycles so we all launched and scratched around until it turned on in the bowl. Shortly thereafter, Glen T. and Keith showed up and joined us. Nice flying in the front part of the bowl; the back part was rather rough. As usual the knob was working as well. After a couple hours Glen and I top-landed to drive down his Quad (very fun!) - Nicole.

Woodside Report - arrived at 5:00 pm, to take Joseph, Martina and Ian J for a flight. Light cycles at launch, bullet thermals down low, smmoth air except over the ridge by the bailout (a few bumps) and over the trees in the Eagle Ranch LZ. Two flights, last one a no wind launch - Jim

June 11 Bridal
Sunny, High 25°c. 0% POP 290° at 13 knots -2.0°/1000'
(standard lapse rate)

Bridal Report - Hi Jim, First flight in almost a month. Bridal was very nice today, valley winds stayed relatively light. I drove up in my Quad and flew for 2 1/2 hrs. Top landed and drove down. Alan, Mark F, Klaus and Carl hiked up. All had good flights. I noticed Mark flew in shorts, I guess summer is finally here - Glen T.

June 10 Bridal
Sunny, High 23°c. 0% POP 280° at 7 knots -2.0°/1000'
(standard lapse rate)
Bridal Report - strong rough wind blown thermals to 5 m/s, with huge collapses near the back bowls. Not student flying conditions even up to 8:00 PM. Up to 4 hours airtime (Mark and Allan), top landings not recommended today. Cool eclipse of the sun while flying, caused the thermals to lose energy until the eclipse passed! - Jim

June 9 Woodside/Bridal
(for students)
Whidbey Island (for experts)
Sunny, High 21°c. 0% POP 320° at 19 knots -1.5°/1000'
(stable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - everyone had to be nuts coming out with a forecast of high winds, but we were rewarded. Launch was quite crowded, Good student flying weather until 3:00pm, when it got too thermic. FlyBC students were the pilots flying with pink ribbons.

Colleen launched with a tangle and put her glider down in Norm's top-landing spot next to Woodside launch. To quote Robin "Colleen even spins in with elegance", as it was quite a benign event, but flowers and kind words will be accepted. She relaunched and thermalled out of there later.

Pemberton Report - McKenzie launch was crowded today with a group of Vancouver/Fraser Valley pilots, a couple of Island pilots, Whistler pilots, and the local Pembie group. Conditions looked good about 1pm so everyone started launching. Northeastery winds up high made for some rough conditions down low, but up high it was fine. Went down range a bit but it was rough so turned back and worked a thermal above the tower with two sailplanes up to 2800m, then crossed the valley and flew the glacier for a bit. Re-crossed the valley back to launch where a bit of Whistler Express was happening, and no launching by other pilots. Headed out to land and look for Lars. Turned out he did his first XC, heading down towards Hurley and landing at a sailplane runway in a field. Congrats! Everyone else had awesome flights, some heading to Hurley, others boating around getting high. A great day for everyone! - Nicole

June 8 Woodside/Bridal Showers possible. Sunny in the PM. High 21°c. 60% POP 320° at 14 knots -2.5°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - Saturday dawned to rain and low clouds, but for those with patience the day played out as predicted. We did some towing until noon, when cloudbase lifted 500 feet above launch at Woodside. Then we started flying with good cycles and smooth buoyant lift.

Colleen and Norm got high as usual, the students that stayed around managed 20-30 minute flights soaring above launch in some cases (wearing the requisite ribbons).

Greg and Jeff flew their HGs for a while landing at Bill Best's field. The last flights were at 6:30 pm, when a cloud snuck over launch and started raining on Rob S as he was ready to launch. After that it got flyable again but everyone was happy with 3 super flights as we headed to the Pub - Jim

Grouse Report - After a good kiting session at Vanier Park , I met up with Russ to fly at Grouse Mtn. Northerly upper-level winds but cycles straight in at launch. We both launched to the cheers of the crowd and found the thermals to be very scattered and not very cohesive. Lots of sink between the thermals and lee-side conditions made for short (20-25 minutes) flights for both of us - Nicole

June 7 Whidbey Island or Stay Home Showers ending, locally windy. High 23°c. 20% POP 300° at 22 knots -3.0°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Whidbey Report - winds looked strong but manageable all afternoon. No pireps - Jim

June 6 Stay Home Showers, locally windy. High 23°c. 60% POP 250° at 10 knots -2.9°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)

No pireps - Jim
June 5 Savona BC

(coast blown out for a few days)
Sunny with cloudy periods, chance of thunderstorms. High 20°c. 60% POP 250° at 7 knots -2.3°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Cochrane Report - 6 pilots soared until dark.

June 4 Blanchard WA Rain in the AM. Sunny with cloudy periods. High 18°c. 60% POP 280° at 16 knots -2.3°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Cochrane Report - I arrived at Muller's at 4:00 pm and watched the wind change from North to West and then Chris pulled out his Trango and got quite high in a rough thermal while I was suiting up and selecting a glider. I picked out Greg's old Bagheera M and was in a rush so I skipped the speedbar and went out to fly. As I was setting up Chris got blown back and was on full bar heading in front of the hill as it gusted up, so I waited a bit cause I couldn't move forward when I brought up the "Bag".

When it cycled down I launched and flew a few passes above Chris and was chuckling as he sidehill landed (because I was so high!), then the bottom dropped out for me too and I also had to land on the slope. From barely penetrating to landing in 5 minutes.

Then Chris kept launching and relanding waiting for a cycle to break off, I kited up the slope a ways to get to smoother ground away from fences and when the cycle broke off, we both got "hoovered" up above the hill. Now I was having penetration problems and had to fly hands up and very streamlined to stay off the neighbour's porch so I flew south a bit and did some wingovers to get down to top-land. I had to leave for dinner so I packed up as Chris soared for another hour, before the locals would take out their wings (I guess it was a bit strong!)

Send flowers and get well cards to Tihi, sporting a cast on his left wrist - last week he and Will Gadd were kiting on separate gliders when a thermal broke off and dragged them straight up and back tangled together before slamming them both down. Tihi sustained a broken wrist and concussion, Will got away with whiplash. Wear your helmets when kiting! - Jim

June 3 Woodside/Bridal Lower Sunny with cloudy periods. High 22°c. 30% POP light and variable -2.5°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - windy until 5:30 pm, then Jack and JM flew one flight, good lift over the bailout, smooth landing conditions, Eagle Ranch LZ has been cut and bailed in the south half.

June 2 Woodside/Bridal Lower Sunny with cloudy periods. High 22°c. 30% POP 280° at 10 knots -2.5°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Bridal Report - Once again the waiting game ... had to wait until around 6pm when it mellowed enough to launch. Nice smooth ridge lift turned into sweet glass-off just before sunset. Robin, Keith, Rob S., Tom on a tandem, and I all got over 1 hour. Ian Mitchell was also there playing around towards Cheam. Nice! - Nicole

Woodside Report - student pilots flew until 11:30 when the winds picked up above 20 km/hr. Same waiting game as Bridal ... Then Derek and I flew tandems until 7:30 pm, when Jem and Greg finally launched and had 30 minute flights into Eagle Ranch. Norm had a small problem at launch but glider was not damaged, just his pride - Jim

June 1 Woodside/Bridal Lower Sunny with cloudy periods. High 21 to 25. 0% POP 280° at 14 knots -2.5°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - great flying from 9:00 am until it got windy at 2:30 pm. Lots of early soaring and interesting gaggles were forming. I sent the students down to Eagle Ranch to ground handle and flew a bumpy tandem with a near vertical landing approach the last 50 feet, so it was the "right call" to suspend training. Ian J and I flew a final flight just before the sun set over Sasquatch Mtn. and it was still very windy - Jim

May 31 Woodside/Bridal Lower cloudy, 40% chance of morning showers, sunny in the PM, high 19° 40% POP 290° at 9 knots -2.6°/1000'
(unstable lapse rate)
Woodside Report - Great flying all day, first flights at 10:30 am were soarable. Bev flew againfor over an hour, second flight of the year - GO GIRL!! Some students got 2 hours airtime today!! The Eagle Ranch LZ has been mowed and landing conditions were smooth - Jim

May 2002 Site of the Day archives an extremely rainy month with the more spring mayhem, another reserve deployment at Lil Nick and a pilot crashed at the top of Deroche Mountain, uninjured but with a ripped glider and long hike down the mountain.
