Eagle Ranch Report - it rained most of the day . . . but that didn't deter Abe and Aaron from continuing the clearing efforts on the north property line. Abe and George getting rid of the burn piles at the Ranch, making it safer for low flying pilots - photo by JPR What started as a tree cutting exercise has become a full logging and land clearing job as the many burn piles collected over the past 10 years (that never burned) are being dumped into the pond to fill it and we are fixing the hump in front of the training hill. Belated Bridal Report 08/30/2010 - 7 Pilots all made it to the Bridal Launch. It was deceiving as there was little wind on launch but reports from all over the valley were saying it was gusting strong. We watched Kevin fly out from Bridal into the valley on full speed bar and used his experience and skill to safely land. The rest of us waited it out on launch for a few more hours, hoping it will calm down. Around 7 pm Ryan decided to go for it. He launched and immediately was lifted above launch. He was parked out front and to show how smooth it was, he sat in front of us with no brakes and laid back. Rudy ran back to the truck to get his wing and soon was n the air. They whooped and hollered, enticing me to join them. After a couple of attempts to launch in a now tail wind, I was up above launch with them. The air was smooth and laminar. Three other pilots drove the trucks down. We all made our way back to the LZ with out to much effort and all touched down in the middle of the LZ. It was a great flight with smiles and fist pounds all around! - Cheers Jason Paragliders make the news in a positive way - Photos and article here.

Benny Report - nice conditions at Mt. St. Benedict today as we took a Mog load of pilots up there, some for their first flights. | Picasa ALBUM here. Martina, Nataliya, Alex W, Tom Chromy, and Colleen had not been off this launch although Martina had helped with the construction projects. Al, and Nicolai blazed off first and headed south followed by Martina, Tom, Nataliya, Alex and Rob while I was briefing driver Claudia on the Unimog. Colleen chose not to fly fortunately, as they had a tire blow-out on the drive down after I launched. Martina, Tom and Natailya were having super-flights getting high south of the launch area when they all got flushed into the Alan Dry Lake for soft landings. I was already in the air on the Ozone R09 chasing Rob south while he was test flying a SkyCountry Discovery III student glider. He got a 45 minute headstart but I caught up with him at the north end of Dewdney Mtn. at 1300 meters, when I got the call that the Unimog had a blown tire. Al and Nikolai were already at Woodside, and Alex was at Deroche. I headed out over Hatzic Lake to descend and spiralled down to land by the truck parking, and landed next to some bee hives. Rob was concerned about the bees, and moved to a neighbour`s lawn to pack up at which point he got stung on the nose. I packed up with my balaclava on after a few bees attacked me too. I removed Rob's stinger and he got his truck and we headed up the mountain to help the girls, when they said they had the tire changed and were heading down. Al and Nikolai landed at Harvest Market, tagging a ride back with Ihor after Bridal got blown out (Kevin A flew and landed backwards on bar on his M3), Alex was in Deroche and Nataliya got him after I took their truck north to Alan Lake. Other than the tire issue, we had the logistics planned well. SkyCountry Discovery III (DHV I-II) Review - I flew St. Benedict today and took the Discovery 3 for a spin. I'm not going to start this review with "When one takes this wing out of the bag, one can tell that this is a different sort of glider..." and then blather on for 3000 words. Simply put, this is a solid entry level glider. It seems to launch well, is fairly responsive to the air for its category, is fairly agile, its speed system does something good, and it lands OK too. The simplicity of the design and durability of its construction also appear good. Since I'm used to flying much faster wings, the only drawback I found was that it just didn't seem to have comp wing speed, but then what do you expect for a wing in this category? Considering that 14 years ago I bought a used Alize for $3300, that wasn't half as good as this wing, this wing would be a good deal for someone who wants a durable entry level glider on an entry level budget. As for the St Benedict flight, I launched, flew around a bit, got shaded out a bit, got cloud sucked a bit, eventually flew to the end of the valley and landed by my truck. While packing up I was injured (probably something to do with inadequate instruction by some un-named instructors, but Jim Reich of Fly BC administered first aid and I think that I will make a full recovery). Full Report to follow. While in the air we overheard a lot of chatter about strong winds at Bridal, with backwards flying, etc. Also a few annoying people on echo-link on Vancouver Island (Klaus might be able to explain the tech), and of course the chatter from our group (Al and Nicolai landed at Harvest Market, Alex Wedensky at Deroche, Martina, Tom and Natalyia in the Miracle Valley area around Alan Lake). Only me and Jim landed at the trucks parked at the base of Dewdney Mtn. Too bad about the Mog tire though . . . - Rob Belated Benny Report - What a day, Nicolay, Rob, Al and me had a really good flight at Mt. St. Benedict. Our goal was to make it to the Eagle Ranch but unfortunately a huge nasty cloud was in our way forcing us to land. Thanks to Rob for driving us. Please find attached my log. More pilots should try Mt. St. Benedict as it is just a supreme place to fly - Cheers, Miguel Flight Log here.

Woodside Report - we got a late start as the students slept in and we didn`t head up the mountain til 11 am and it was getting strongish. | Only Jocelyn got a flight as her friends watched, and by the time a few others flew off it got clearly too thermic for second day students. We called the day by 1 pm and sent them home for another calmer day. A few experienced pilots got high and went east as it looked like it would OD. Some interesting approaches into the Ranch as it started blowing strong from the SW. Brock wrote his Novice Exam and will soon be signed off and hoping to fly late afternoons as he is on day shift.

Woodside Report - it was the busiest I have seen Woodside in years, because Bridal wasn`t flyable due to NE outflow winds. | But Woodside was ``unbelievable`` with pilots flying above cloudbase, with many XC flights to Harrison Beach and beyond. We flew 12 tandems today, including my last flight with Jen who couldn`t get off launch for her first solo, so I took her tandem and we landed next to Stonehenge as the party had already started. Thanks for turning on the landing lights for us! Thanks to Norm for the 30 lb salmon, which was devoured. Also thanks to everyone who attended. Our 5 new students did amazingly well (mostly due to Phil`s previous kiting sessions on Burnaby Mountain), but Eric had never kited and got his first solo flight along with Andrew, Jocelyn, and Cheryl. Jocelyn on her first solo flight tonight - photo by JPR Old students Brock, Gary P (2 hours plus), and Trevor had some really great flights too. John flinally got his ``glass-off`` flight tonight after 5 years of flying - photo by JPR Benny Report - Al & Miguel flew from Mt St Benedict, but apparently hit rain between Deroche and Lake Erroch which killed their lift. Rob was driver today and retrieved them.

Woodside Report - we worked in the rain and wind most of the day, and around 3 pm if cleared up. | after some wrangling we got Derek, Colleen, Norm, Derek & I in the truck and we were heading to launch to pin down the Nylex carpet. Martina didn`t have a wing and volunteered to drive so I could test fly the Skycountry Discovery 3 (DHV I-II). Colleen was flying her new Ozone Delta S. Colleen launched first and found a few thermals, Norm went north and was soaring in the north bowl below launch, derek chased the same thermals as Norm and they were all heading out as I launched. I launched after some kiting attempts, and found the Lower Launch thermal and rode it over launch to 900 meters. It was getting lonely up here so I flew out to the Ranch to fly over the fresh logging as Abe`s machine mulched up the debris. I flew all around the goal post trees and in fact flew in between them to smooth air. It was almost 7 pm however, so no themals expected. We went back up and Derek flew the D3 and I flew his Addict II and this time Derek got above launch and I only got a few turns.

Woodside Report - wet and windy all day, but that didn`t stop some more logging & brushing in the north property line. Abe`s machine was working and I spent a few hours with the chainsaw brushing out the larger trees. The view to the North is wide open on the webcams now. | Don`t forget to come to the Ranch after 6 pm for Salmon BBQ and potluck dinner party on Saturday August 28. Woodside flying should be good most of the day, or fly over here from Bridal & Elk. Edmond & Jerry flew off Mt. Baker in July

Woodside Report - interesting turbulence today at the inversion level caused some concern for pilots. No drama but a few collapses noted. | Not a concern for our two super-students: Glen (Ozone Ultralight 19) & Brock (Prodesign Accura) as they were thermalling around getting above launch on their 4 flights. Brock and Dale headed towards Harvest on flight #3. The advanced pilots headed to Bridal to escape the rough air, but the students were loving the challenge and had some great flying here and it never got windy as forecast. Our tandems showed up early and we were in the air around 6 pm, and showed them some nice evening air and super launches and landings at the Ranch. Gloat reports from Jack and Derek from Bridal had them at Upper Launch from 4 pm on til 7 pm. Nice air and no turbulence as they got above 800 meters (todays inversion layer). Villeneuve Report - Just before starting as a working class again we drove to Villeneuve to be at the Sonchaux Acro Show. It used to be the Vertigo but because of some sponsor problems it nowadays is just a three day show full of acro action, hanggliders, skydivers, basejumpers and stuntplanes. We had a perfect weekend with beautiful weather, nice flights and awesome parties. There's a small local news report in where you can see Johannes flying his Epsilon (at 20sec): Story here. There's a lot of great pictures taken by a newspaper photographer: Pics here. Just click on the four top links. I had the oppertunity to land on the small inflatable platform but on the first try I miscalculated my groundspiral and landed in the water: On the second try, the next day I landed the "normal" way and kept my gear dry! What a great weekend! - Wouter and Johannes

Woodside Report - an awesome day of tandems for Max & Mary, Lynn & her family (4), Josh (new student) and finally Steve W came out to fulfill his BFAR tandem . | Thats right - 8 tandems all at Woodside and a few nice soaring flights too! Rees and Vince both got to get above launch, and Colleen got above launch on her tandem flight too. Vince & Jim approaching to do a top landing approach today as all three FlyBC vehicles were on launch - photo by JPR We went to Bridal as planned but by 6 pm, all pilots were on the ground and it was blowing down at launch so back to Woodside for the BFAR tandem. Thanks to Al for taking us back to launch to retrieve the FlyBC Fleet!

Woodside Report - a number of pilots were flying Woodside early and there was nice development around. | I watched as there was a gaggle around the South Knoll and one lone glider high to the North, who it turned out later to be Norm. Norm and Chris U flew out to the Ranch while others landed at Riverside where their cars were parked. The air was reportedly quite rough and disorganized with no real wind direction. I headed to Bridal after 3:30 pm, but missed a ride up and decided to drive up solo, but didn`t fly as the conditions couldn`t guarantee a top landing and I had to be back to the Ranch at 6 pm for a student flight. Benny Report - Al & Andrew B flew Benny today and Andrew flew to Seabird Island, while Al landed at the truck parking lot to retrieve Andrew. Andrew`s first XC east of Woodside. Nice flight.

Woodside Report - it looked flyable around 10 am, until we arrived on launch and the clouds were flying past, but it was launchable. As we had new students we did the safe thing and drove down and before we hit the bottom, it started raining. So students headed home and tandems were cancelled until Thursday. | We then tackled the Job List and 2 reno jobs got dealt with and we had a leisurely dinner with Colleen`s sister and family at 7 pm, as the mountain got sunny and the winds died down. Tomorrow looks better as I can now see the stars. Ozone Delta vs Boomerang delta l vs boom m from markus kroiss on Vimeo. Read the comments about the Delta matching the glide of the Boomerang! Woodside Report - we had a great morning and early afternoon until the winds picked up. | Will & Emma went for their first tandems at 11 m with Colleen & I and we had a great time thermalling over Woodside. The pilots who flew after us didn`t like the air however, as they said it was getting rough and too thermic. James landed around 3 pm and made it look easy although he did say his Golden ``balled-up`` once. We had some tandems at 3 pm that we had to send home as it was too strong. Good progress with Will & Emma in the kiting mid-day in the LZ and they are ready for solos tomorrow, if the weather cooperates. Alan reported from Bridal that he logged 3 hours and landed around 3:30 pm, as it was getting too windy. Others launched after that and endured the wind and were getting up high. Woodside Fun Report - we had a Happy Birthday Tandem Fest for Drew H today. He brought out his wife, brother and two pals to go tandem and he flew his Ozone Geo II for 3 hours watching the process. | Flight #1 had Colleen and Kevin as Pilots-in-Command and they "skied-out" and after 45 minutes headed to Harvest followed by new student Danny. Super lift and some cloud-suck! Flight #2 had me switch places with Colleen and Kevin & I took to the skies and we had more perfect lift and Kevin flew out to Little Mountain near Chilliwack and back to tag Woodside. Danny and gary P were back in the sky duking it out with Al and a few others. This tandem we landed at the Ranch around 3 pm to perfect conditions even flying over the Scary Corner where the trees are gone. Rob S had a pretty nice flight on his borrowed Boom 5: I launched at Woodside and flew to Harvest . . . Flight Log via Agassiz, Green Hill, Butterfly, Elk, and Upper Bridal - Rob S Later we headed to Bridal arriving too late as it shut down and we watched the pilots landing after they flew for a few hours. Cultus Report - watch out when flying near Cultus Lake these days . Story here.

Woodside Report - it actually looked flyable around 3 pm, when the wind died down. | I spent 4 hours chopping brush with chainsaw and brush mower on the north property line, and I am thinking a wood chipper is a `must have`purchase now. Some of the trees I cut are volunteers from less than 8 years ago when we last brushed out this area.

Valley Report - a good day for tandems and solo flights. Two tandems at 2 pm, then another at 4 pm all from Woodside that go up pretty high landing at Harvest where I had stashed the Van earlier. | Then on to Bridal for Julie`s 50th Birthday tandem around 6 pm, where others had been soaring for some time. Nice day! When we arrived Brock commented on the cool harness a pilot was wearing. When we arrived, said pilot was gathering a wing out of the trees! Witnesses on lower bridal observed an unnamed pilot crash into the trees just below the campfire pit while attempting a top landing. Most interesting to the newcomers were the comments being uttered by the pilot as he tried to get his wing to fly over the trees instead of into them. "Come on, Baby....Come on Baby....Come on Baby.....you can do it!" Brock logged his 27th flight and 2nd Bridal flight with a great launch and super landing. Pemberton Mountain (Pritchard BC) Report - We flew Pemberton Mnt. last Sat. It was good. We had 2.5 + hours airtime with altitudes of 2500 meters. Max vario was +6.4 -4.5 The road up is a bit tough. Dave and Pavol have done a good job clearing the launch out. Louise has also flown from this site. Video Diary here

Cheam Hike & Fly Report - last night a plan was set to meet at Bridal LZ at 7 am! We were a few minutes late but despite a closed Hwy 1 due to a fatal accident, we made it to the Spoon Lake Parking area by 9:00 am. | Kevin A, Derek, Martina, Colleenm Ian W and I started up the mountain and had a great hike arriving at the top between 1:30 and 1:50 elapsed time. Colleen & I cheated as we took her Magnum 38 tandem and 2 Oxygen I hiking harnesses up - total weight of 28 lbs split between us made for easy hiking. Jim with the Magnum 38 in a hiking pack, approaching the Spoon Lake Snow Tunnel, a new feature for 2010 - photo by CMV Kevin launched first and had a few bubbles but once over the Saddle he was heading to the Swamp LZ and an east wind landing. Colleen & I launched second into the SW winds and got off after 1 flub and we were crusing the Saddle Ridge with good speed. We flew along the Archibald Ridge but there was little sun on the rocks so no beeps, but we did see Alan`s cinnamon bear at the top of the road foraging. We spotted the cinnamon bear that has been halting Alan`s hikes lately - photo by CMV The wind was definitely east in the LZ so I tried a tricky aproach over the driving range which worked pretty well! Kevin was already packing up when we arrived with Martina and Derek close behind. Derek said we launched too soon, but we were worried about it getting too strong and too west. Ian arrived back around 3:30 pm, as he must have made a wrong turn and ended up in the US? Later a group went up Bridal and soared for 1:30, but I was back at the Ranch napping. Later Martina took her friend Chrissie to Woodside to fly and they soared for an hour.

Woodside Report - an old face showed up yesterday with two buddies for tandems - Roman! | He flew (first flight in 6 years) after his two pals flew with Martina and Kevin. Colleen took new student Sharon for her first tandem and they soared! Steve D and Chris U were out flying too, as well as Jon Orders and a student on HG. Not really soarable until after 11 pm, when I was brushing out launch. We took too long doing tandems so we missed the Benny flights, but Rob and Al flew to Hwy 7.

Woodside Tandem Report - we had an awesome day of tandems today! We completed 12 tandems between 11 am and 5 pm completed, most were soaring flights. | Thanks go out to Peter G, Ian J, Brad, Colleen & Martina who each did 2-3 tandems each throughout the day. Thanks too to Derek and Thomm who retrieved a few vehicles as we had the entire FlyBC Fleet of Unimog, Ford Van and Suzuki on launch at one point! Woodside Launch as seen by Dale - photo by Dale We didn't get super-high but certainly got above the towers and could have easily gone XC, but decided to stay local to keep the flow going. We also had three student flights during the day as Brock was "out soaring" Derek at one point, and new students Les & Russell were also out for Day 2. Each time I flew tandem I intentionally flew over the cleared treeline in the NW corner of Eagle Ranch and not a bump, although a few tandems got dumped out of a thermal near the circle. More work to do there, as we need to clear out the deadfall and debris this fall. Bridal Report - Alan was reporting out at the Butterfly at 1300 meters as the winds picked up at Woodside, but he made it home. Black Mountain Report - several posts suggested rough leeside flying at Black, sorry we couldn't make it down but we had over 20 tandems this weekend at the Ranch.

Woodside Report - a very long day! Outflow til 4 pm, then beautiful soaring til sunset. | We started early with new students Les & Russell, and day 2 student Greg out in the LZ kiting, and these guys were ready to launch in an hour! Perfect forwards every time! I took them to the training hill and they were even better on the slope. It was already getting hot by 11 am, so we went indoors for ground school sessions and I kept watching the windsocks on launch. A dedicated group of pilots went up in Martin H's truck and waited on top and were not happy with the east winds howling over the back, despite up cycles. Back down they came and waited, and waited and eventually left. We had 6 tandems booked (and Les and Russell to take tandem for first flights) and they had to wait til 4 pm, when we decided it was good and I launched first with Russell and we climbed out. After about 15 minutes I handed over the controls and he flew us out to the Ranch into perfect landing conditions. We even crossed the "scary corner" where we have been logging and it was good there too. Martin N and Martin H were flying Bridal at the same time, and last report had Martin H over the "Lakes" at 2000 meters. The northwest corner is where we cut out many trees, hopefully it will all be cleared and debris removed this fall - photo by Mandy The cycles of launches went slow as leeside conditions will do, but by sunset we had many solo flights including first solos for Les and Russell and Greg flew twice. Joe C scared everyone by full stalling his wing several times despite repeated commands to go "hands-up", before landing in the swamp safely? We didn't get the last two tandems off, but the last tandems with Colleen and Martina flying were beautiful "glass-off" soaring flights getting very high, before it shut down at launch. Thanks to Derek for driving and missing the "glass-off" to help us out today. Benny Report - Me and Al took our time getting there when we should have been there sooner. It was launch able when we got to launch and probably soar-able for the hour before. Al launched at about 3:00 pm. Anyways lift was good and strong, we got good and high and we went good and far - Rob S My track Log here

Eagle Ranch Report - we went up to launch at 11 am, as we saw some up-cycles in the telescope, but when we arrived the east winds had picked up and we were sure it wasn't safe to fly. | By the time we arrived back down to the bottom, it was blowing 30 kph from the NW. Good for kiting but too gusty for safe landings for students even if one could get into the air. Kiting lasted til dark while we went logging near Chimp Creek. Thanks go out to Derek & Rob who spent a few hours each in the brush cutting down trees on the North property line! And to Colleen for driving the Unimog while we were pulling barbed wire out of the bush. Woodside Report - frickin' awesome day here. | New student Greg arrived on time and we did some ground school and then went up for a tandem at 11 am, and he was a natural in the air and on landing. We thermalled for abot 30 minutes before heading out and it looked like the day was shaping up nicely. Martina launched after us in a bad cycle and was soon on the ground with us, as Jack and Derek "sky-ed out" and headed to Harvest to try some XC. Greg & I did some kiting and he was making the Buzz look good every try. Then onto the training hill where he had many good launches and landings. Others started flying and enjoying the lift as the Cumies formed, staying up for several hours. Martina was back in the air "duking it out" with Colleen and had her first Delta collapse (about 20%). We headed up around 5 pm, with Greg & Lee for their solo flights and we had two really nice flights with Greg thermalling on his first flight and staying up above launch! Lee also thermalled but it was his 5th flight. Greg had a great landing. We headed back up at 7 pm, for the last flighs and it was starting to go catabatic. Greg pulled off a great light wind forward launch and landed in the circle. Lee had a great forward launch too, as he is used to reversing and also hit the circle. Again a great day of training at the Ranch. ps: more trees are going down at the Ranch northside property line, to open up the airflow and it seems to be working as all landings were smooth even mid-day.

Woodside Report - many good flights today at Woodside, in fact much better than Bridal oddly. | Nice development despite NOAA forecasting stable air. Richard bagged 2 flights and had a great landing at the Ranch even though it was judged gusty by Colleen, then we tried to get him high enough to get to Harvest to meet up with Alex and Ryan but he made a few turns away from the lift and sunk out. Next time he will get there! Then on to Bridal for his third flight and a perfect landing! Delta Test Report - I finally got a soaring flight on my new Delta! The clouds were popping early this morning & when we launched at 11:30 we thought we were too late, but we all flew as long as we wanted. Woodside today - photo by MKL The Delta made this flight even more enjoyable than a normal cloud-surfing one! When the sky around me started getting misty I stomped on my speedbar & flew right back into the clear blue, and even though there were clues that I was flying through some rough patches the flight on full bar was smooth & I never felt I had to come off to prevent a collapse. Woodside today on my Delta! - photo by MKL Cranking tight in the thermals was a blast! It felt stable & fast & I didn't have to think about anything but staying in the core. The Delta's glide is incredible! Every time I flew out & turned to come back I arrived higher than I thought on the hill. The only problem I have with this wing is that I have to learn to land again as my final glide is so floaty & long! Since Norm is charging $100 for demos I thought I'd undercut & let pilots try for 99. :) - Martina Bridal Report - Birthday Girl Carla (30) went tandem with her friend Roo. I took Carla and launched first and we soared for 45 minutes hugging in close and watched pilots venture away to Alan's Ridge and points east and not get up so we stayed on the Knob. Nice conditions but not good enough to get up and top-land. Carla on her Birthday Ride - photo by Carla Martina took Roo over to the Bridal Fall's for a scenic tour and while we were spiralling down to land, Roo got sick. Not just woozy but she "blew chunks"! Glad we weren't close! Tom Chromy's Golden Report - did a great 110K flight this week! My track Log here . Wouter's Vacation Report - You just got to love the Alps. Spectacular flyingsites like Chamonix, Interlaken, Fiesch or Annecy within a few hours drive. Me and Johannes drove through France and Switserland the last two and a half weeks. It was a great time, visiting lots of flyingsites on our way. Only two days of bad weather. First stop was Geneva with the beautiful west facing Saleve, a huge 800m evening soarspot. Nice flying at the local club, which hosted a testival and party. Wouter at St. Hilaire - photo by Wouter Then on to Annecy for a week of XC and ACRO action. Several XC's in the area thanks to the perfect conditions. Good altitudes over the water for tricks and d-bags (movie coming soon). Wouter at Annecy - photo by Wouter Then to the mediterranean sea relaxing at the coast with some friends for a few days. But got crazy of not flying so on our way to Laragne. North wind 40knots. Continued to Chamonix. Low cloudbase and rain every now and then. Half an hour later we were in Switserland chilling with some crazy swiss friends and waiting for better weather. Next day sunny skies and perfect flying conditions. Flew and stayed around Villeneuve for some days, great place, friendly people and good acro learning school with very skilled pilots. Did my first little acroshow with swiss friends at a local filmfestival. Wouter at Villeneuve - photo by Wouter Either camping at LZ's or staying at friends places kept the costs low. Then finally off to Interlaken. A spectacular scenery. Jungfrau, Munch and Eiger form a beautiful high-mountain view when you fly one of the famous valleys around. Flew the steep cliff-faced valley of Lauterbrunnen, a world famous basejump paradise. Visited Grindelwald located just below the impressive Eiger northface and flew over Interlaken, landing in the centre of town on a huge beautiful LZ. Great trip. There's much more to see but we'll keep that for future roadtrips. Wouter at Verel - photo by Wouter Hope everyone is doing great. I miss being in Canada this summer. Woodside Report - we started clearing out the trees on the NW corner of Eagle Ranch, in hopes of reducing turbulence in strong South winds. Derek and Rob manned the saws and cut the larger trees, while Abe is coming over with the excavator to brush cut the smaller stuff. Thanks to Alan and Kevin for cheering us on and being on-site supervisory personnel. | Down with the trees! - photo by KVA Afterwards, we headed up the mountain with a full vanload for a sled ride. Woodside Report - no flying today, although there were a few breaks from 10 am - noon, but our tandems cancelled until next Monday. | Note: you can get any make of glider here at FlyBC, but we won't guarantee you can do an Infnite Tumble on it . . . solo or tandem :-)

Woodside Report - we had many tandems to do today, but low clouds had us cancel some til later in the week, but we pulled off three good tandems thanks to Colleen & Martina. I took Slav tandem and we were playing at 'base for 30 minutes before a "drop-in landing" at the Ranch. I suggested other land at harvest after that flight. Strong south winds made for interesting turbulence over Harrison Mills. | Playing in the clouds tandem with Brad Henry - photo by Slav At 6 pm, after all the tandems left, we went up for a glass-off flight and Derek, Colleen, Alex R and Dan got to fly. Still strong south in the air but nice air in the Eagle Ranch LZ.

Woodside Report - we got an early start to ensure we didn't get blown out, but the wind won in the end. Burt was $40 richer as Gary K and Dan M missed our field, but they landed safely on their second flights. | We waited til 4 pm, and decided kiting was safer. Later Gary H and Karen went tandem just before dark and reported "glass-off" with some strong south still in the air on the way out. Mt St Benny Report - Rob S, Al, and Wylie all flew and had extended sledders with 15 kph south wind in the Miracle Valley.

Woodside Report - I had only Joe C & Dan McN today so it was a manageable day. | Norm and Thomm came out and weren't motivated to fly as it was windy and hazy but Joe jumped at the chance to get into the air. I flew after Joe landed on the R09 coupled to the new SupAir Shamane harness . As official SupAir dealers here in Canada, we are the first to get one of these fantastic light weight comp harnesses! I had a 30 minute flight staying at launch height but the thermals were pretty "snarled up" with tight turns and figure-8s to keep in them. Landing was okay but it tooks some time to get down as the fields were thermic. Norm drove by Bridal on the way to fish, and said no cars or gliders were seen.

Savona Report - we looked at the upper levels today which forecasted strong NE winds and Sumas was reporting 045 degrees at gust to 20 mph at 8 am, so off to Savona. | A quick tour of the Fraser Canyon for Dan M from Barrie, ON got us into Ashcroft at 10 am, but no wind and hazy conditions meant Cornwall was out as we couldn't see the top due to smoke. Onwards to Savona. We arrived at Savona to a light W wind and Jim & Dan did a "sleddie" off the Toilet Bowl ridge. Then on to the Lower Launch takeoff as the smoke was obscuring the view to the bottom from Upper Deadman's Launch. The view from the Crash Pad up towards the HG Launch - photo by JPR The guys landed below in the Valley LZ where an Ozone windsock is still standing from last year. We headed up to Deadman's PG Launch and met up with Tom Chromie who had not flown here and he flew off first and had some nice lift but got fixated on the first windsock he saw (the Valley LZ) and he landed. Next up was Jim and he got off clean and was high but he also fixated on the windsock in the Valley LZ and landed with Tom C. Dan launched last and was "sky-ing out" and headed east towards the Crash Pad and had a nice downwind landing as he mis-calculated his turn to final. No cactus! Just a fast run to stop. The view from Deadman's toward the Crash Pad with Tom above launch as usual - photo by JPR It was getting later but they wanted another try to get to the Crash Pad so back to the top: Jim & Tom C launched and Dan sttod down as I worked him too hard today. Jim landed first at the Crash Pad on top of the Toilet Bowl, elated after thermalling out. When we left Tom C was still ridge soaring the Crash Pad. Reports from the Valley that a PG was seen over Woodside today later, and 2 PGs over Bridal around 3 pm, so the outflow must have subsided.

Woodside Report - "Dancing with the Devil" as we flew 2 flights at Woodside during the day. | Sounds dangerous, as we heard thunder coming from Seabird Island, Cultus Lake and behind Cheam . . . but clear skies and light winds in Harrison Mills. Super smooth air and landing conditions. The only limitation was east wind at launch shut us down for a period. But Anne, Dan and Jim N all flew today. Lumby Report - Normando reports "the more I fly the Delta . . . the more I am lovin' it". Flying with Vultures - Path into the Future from African Renaissance Productions on Vimeo.

Early Woodside Paramotor Report - we were barely out of the sack when I heard 3 paramotors roar overhead as Ian J, Leon and Brett flew in from King George Airpark on a 1:38 flight. Leon went direct without refueling, and the others stopped near Deroche to fuel up in case. Ian was flying the new secret 175 cc motor Leon is developing. | Woodside Report - a busy day with 6 students and 6 tandems but we pulled it off. Thanks to Colleen, Peter G and Tonya for helping with tandems! We had 6 brilliant tandems all way above launch at 1100 meters and arriving over the Ranch above launch for some spiralling fun! The students did well with a few flights on either side of the strong stuff. Ryan L and new student Gary P were duking it out for 3 hours plus on their matching Buzz's and I forgot that Gary had only 16 flights cause he was flying so well! Woodside Report - Mt. St. Benedict: Matt Jesson, an un-named pilot, and I flew St. Benedict today. Strong lift but light winds in that valley. I got beat up on Nicomen in the strong Fraser valley wind and landed at the crescent shaped field at Deroche. The un-named pilot landed up Norrish Creek and Matt landed in a good filed near St. Benedict. Rob's Track On the way home I saw an helijet air ambulance landed near Cascade Falls and a lot of SAR trucks racing that direction so I guess there must have been some long weekend craziness going on at Cascade Falls or Macdonald Falls or Davis Lake - Rob

Woodside Report - we had to wait til 1 pm to start launching as a layer of cloud obscured launch. After the first gliders launched the layer was gone and we could fly all day. | Alex W was out thermalling his new Nova Factor and ``lovin' it``. Trevor was out flying his new Mojo3 and we had 2 new student visitors from WA state flying with us too. It never got windy. Golden Report - the Canadian Nationals are over for 2010 The Comp is over and Results here.

Woodside Report - 3 new students for a 2 day course, and Aaron was out coaching them most of the day on the FlyBC Training Hill. We took Sarah & Jon tandem after 1 pm, and reports of turbulent landings at the Ranch had us fly them on nice flights over to Harvest Market. Smooth air all the way there with some soaring on the South Knoll. | Lots of solo pilots out this long weekend, despite thunderstorm forecasts. Later, Colleen & I took Lee and Sandeep tandem to prepare them for their solo flights tomorrow. Perfect conditions later and after we shut down, it rained lightly. Perfect day. Wow! July is officially over now! Busy month and little rain. Lots of student & SIV flights. Belated Benny Report Friday - Hammer & Rob flew Benny, with a planned landing at the hay field I landed in a few weeks ago where Al's truck was parked. They flew above the inversion for 1:10 before a nice landing with tons of lift over the hay field. I saw only CUs up that Valley when we were flying Woodside, everything else was hazy. Golden Report - only a few pilots in goal today, but Nicole is edging up into 8th place. Robert Hauser is flying an Ozone Mantra R10.2 supplied from FlyBC and he is doing extremely well at his first Golden Comp. We have to get one of these for the Barn! |
